Bobs list is getting worse!!

Does anyone know the owner of short narrowboat Bob (60472)- moored lower Berkhamstead , down from the Rising Sun.

It has a list to the bankside, and this has become markedly worse in the last two weeks, now the canal level is only one inch below the exhaust outlet. I have not seen anyone near the boat for months.

Do you know the person who works for BW who moors very near where I think you still are ?

They may well already be aware of the owner, and obviously if not can doubtless get someone to set something in motion.

OK, you could "go through channels", but if you know who I mean, I feel sure they might get a result faster, so I hope that person doesn't mind me mentioning it here.

I think I know the boat you mean - it must have got quite a bit worse, quite quickly, as it had only a mild list a week or two back - not obviously going low in the water at all, I think. Not something that looked to need urgent action then, I thought.

I assume you have contacted BW and asked them to pass on the info.

"click - our office hours are mon............"

It has always had a little list, it just looks like it has got worse in the last few days with the wet weather.

I am not sure who the local BW person is Alan....would someone admit to that

Pm me the boat name and I will pop and see them.

AFAIK BW are very well aware of the boat in question. With any luck BW will get there before it sinks or I might even make the effort myself with a pump if I get a chance to go walking the area again. My last planned walk to view the new lock gates at Topside was curtailed by a late person under a bridge. Very sad indeed.

Unfortunately I am pumpless or would do the same, the engine hatch doesn't look sealed, and I think the snow, ice and rain are getting in bit by bit.

I looked again this evening, and it is definitely more challenged than it was in a photo I took just over a month ago.

here's from a couple of days ago Carl, list is worse now after snow and rain, sinking imminent.

edit,

alan, I walked past this morning and the exhaust hole is less than 1/4 " above the canalwater. The boat has moved a lot within the last 4 weeks.

Maybe it's an illusion from the photos, but doesn't look that scary to me.

We have stripped the kitchen in Chalice, had some ballast to move, and stacked large number of boxed units and worktops inside all on the same side.

The list this induced looked nearly as bad, to my eye, but certainly not a sinking risk.

Perhaps "Bob" looks worse in the flesh ?

Sadly I've injured myself very badly today, and can't get to the loo, let alone the Grand Union, so it will be many days before I'm towpath cycling or walking again.

(Note's whoops of joy from Kiki  ).

I must say, assuming they can be contacted in time, the owner of this boat is very fortunate to have such a conscientious group of boaters looking out for them.

Trouble is, if a boat is cared for more by passersby than the owner it will never work in the long term.

  • 4 months later...

Narrowboat Bob sank over the weekend, with the resulting pollution of the canal ensuing. It was surrounded by containment booms to limit the damage.

It has been pumped out at least twice in the last 4 months and apparently has a new owner as it has moved to above Northchurch.

But must now own up to something - the Much Beloved came home a week or so ago with guess what yup, a bike. Am consulting solicitors as we speak.
