BW enforcement officers using binoculars

Domestic control says that that BW are quite welcome to look at her in the buff using bino's. She says that it might encourage them to cut down on the booze, stop smoking, eat your five a day and do 30mins excersise daily. It would also be a big boost to her morale (? sp) if they didnt immediately look away.

If Mr BW man was taking photos for work purposes and is linked to your personal data then this would fall under the data protection act. A call (and a small fee) to BW to ask for what data they hold on you is possible.

The fee's a tenner and the request needs to be in writing. For copied disclosure they suggest 35p per copy as a max to a maximum of £50 including the tenner. They're supposed to respond within 40 working days I think, the Information Commissioner's website isn't working for me; the fees are certainly correct

It really depends on where you are.

The patrol officers in my area are great and do everything they can to help all boaters, regardless of the paint job, on their boats. I believe this has a lot to do with the attitudes of past regional managers, as well as the Whitecaps themselves.

Many other regions are equally fortunate with their choice of Patrol Officers but, like most enforcement professions there are complete morons who think their uniform is the equivalent of a soldier's, post coup, which tarnishes the reputation of the rest.

Two of the neighbouring areas have patrol officers that have done things that, quite frankly, would have got them the sack, in the private sector and were certainly breaches of the BW Act.

But, on the whole, I agree with Phylis, the vast majority of BW staff, on the ground, care as much about the waterways as us and are happy to maintain a good relationship with all boaters.

I have very limited experience of Mooring Wardens because I rarely, if ever, used visitor moorings.

The one at Gayton, I met 12 years ago, was lovely and the woman who sold tat, off her boat, in Braunston was just a little bit weird.-

Do you mean the' lady' who sold earings? She wasn't weird but she is a 'lady'

In your opinion, perhaps. I always found her very pleasant but definitely weird.

I'm not sure what your objection to "woman" is but Swmbo prefers it to 'lady' so I will stick with the opinion of a woman who loves me, rather than a woman who makes no secret of her intense (though unjustified) dislike for me.

Where would you put your license if you don't have any windows or portholes?

There's aboat moored online outside the cheshire cat with just that no windows except for a frame in the front cratch area must be like a blackhole. Must like it though been there months.

This year I will mostly be knitting so Mr enforcer could watch and learn,to be honest I think I would have put some clothes on and come out and pulled his leg a bit.Old madcat ladies can be a bit wicked!

Anybody who accidentally views me in the pink would probably be turned to stone or be found dead with a look of frozen horror on their face.

Sorry I haven't met anyone with an intense dislike of you justified or otherwise.

Try lady as in the honourable lady

Some interesting posts - Traffic wardens always photograph cars when they issue a ticket for a car parking offence.

I used to take pictures of houses to use for slide shows at talks I gave, I used to look at houses through binoculars when working, no one complained.

Why be so sensitive because it's a boat.

Leo.

I have no idea about the woman's honour, I just found her nice but weird (and I was not alone) but I still don't know why you corrected a perfectly acceptable term.

If I saw you taking photographs of my house, or looking at it, through binoculars, I would ask you why you were doing it.

If your response was "because I can!" I would ring the police and tell them I suspected you of casing my property for a burglary.

If you explained your motives and they were perfectly innocent then I would let you snap away (unless you are a Safestyle UK salesman, in which case you would be thrown in the hole, with the rest of them).

Its a very poor comparision you've made.

Houses are people's homes and boats are often people's homes too. Its as simple as that.

Houses are homes, boats are boats.

Some Polish builders I know made their car their home for some weeks until they found a home to rent. Just because you make a shell of some sort home, it does not give you the same rights a your own property if you know what I mean.

Sleeping in a car or a boat is the same thing no?

.

something which always bothered me about living on a boat is you don't actually have a 'right to be anywhere'

sort of like living in a car, or a van or whatever.

I spend most of my time trying to avoid having a narrowboat in my canal photos! If there are any proper boats however I have no problem with taking a photo of them.

so if you are 'canalwalker' then what do you call 'proper boats' ?

Perfectly reasonable and that's what I used to do - people are quite helpful if you explain things.

Hmm. sorry but in either case you are taking pictures of people's property.

Yes I find the space, between narrow and boat, quite important, when it comes to photogenics, too.

I occasionally pop over to see what is happening on japanese ski-ing and bar fronts, and this is fairly commonplace on Japinternet.

The OP has been over there for something and had a return visit.

You might take the piss out of me but I dont care. I assert that no-one has a "right" to be anywhere. Dont matter whether its a house, car, caravan, tent or boat. Everwhere has to be authorised/approved by some sort of legislation. if I travel abroad I need a passport/visa, if I stay in accomodation I need to pay for it. If I enter a pub I do so at the publican's discretion. if I want to become part of a group I have to gain that groups trust. if I go for a walk in the park i have to observe the park's rules and regulations. If I move into a house or flat, I have to pay council taxes and whatever and follow the rules and regulations of that area (including spray painting cars, burning fires, hanging washing out, making alterations to my abode etc.)

It doesnt mater what sort of home you have, even if you hide it under a blue tarpaulin haystack and try to claim the right to build without permission as yours after four years, rules and regulations and whatever depreciate any rights one ever hopes to behold.

And is perfectly legal to do so (and rightly so) as long as you are on public land.

You can only take pictures of private property if you are keeping them for yourself. If you are going to publish them, you need the owner's consent to do so, under copy-right laws. Whilst the photographer owns the copy-right of the actual picture, the owner of the property owns the intelectual copy-right of the property, unless they sign a release form.

Same goes for photographing people.

So in effect, if you post a picture on-line, say here, of a pretty boat you have seen, you need the owner's consent to do so.

And as for officials using binoculars, or cameras, to check your property, you are entitled to request to see those pictures, to check if they may include 'in-appropriate' images (such as a person in a state of undress... , or the interior (possesions) unrelated to the check). You are entiteled to see these pictures on the spot so to speak, if you suspect that the person has taken such an in-appreopriate image.
