I often read on here that the moderators and admin are overworked etc as an answer to any complaint made about them. If that is the case, why not use more admin/mods? (don't shoot me down in flames this is not criticism but a genuine question)

On the other hand, why not operate a system whereby if a thread that appears from it's title that fairly obviously appears to be porn (or offensive in some other way to you), that you simply do not look at it ?

That way you'll only get caught out if the topic heading is something like "Problems with Beta fuel filter", but the content is a little more raunchy.

As the porn spammers seldom seem to have even that much wit, most of us can preserve our sensibilities just by not opening the ones that look "dodgy" surely ?

Nah It'll never work - you know what curiosity did to the cat......

I'm not sure I understand quite how this porn spam business is meant to work.

Is the spammer's thought process thus: There must be loads of people out there who have never seen porn, or at least can't be bothered to seek it out, but if I slip a few pics onto a canal forum, they'll find that they like it and I'll have 'em hooked....

I find that odd....

Surely if anybody wants to look at porn on t'Internet, you simply issue a single Google, with an appropriate search string, and it will bring up enough to satisfy all but the most seasoned porn viewer.

Careful addition of one or two suitable extra keywords to your search string would tailor it for any personal "specialisations" that particularly interested you.

Seems to me a far more reliable way of viewing porn than hanging around the forum all day, in the hope some will turn up, and you can get to see it before it gets reported and removed.

Still, each to their own, I suppose........

Bien cordialement,

Michel

I think that's just about it yes...

The other reason is down to simple maliciousness or criminal intent as some of the sites are infected with various pieces of malware, spyware etc. a simple way to infect an unprotected system.

Edit for typo.

I think that is the main reason MJG, maliciouness. I don't know if it has happened to this forum, but groups of people like to hack into forums and sites for the fun. The forum is unavailable until a file is replaced or code changed back, then up and running as normal. This happens to thousands of forums and sites every day. When the forum builders release updates to cover the vulnerability and to stop the hacker getting in a certain way, then their fun begins again, trying to find another way to spoil someone's enjoyment, with no benefit to them, only the fact that they have broken something for the sake of it. A digital form of vandalism.

The other reason that MJG has also pointed out is that if someone inadvertently clicks on something that links elsewhere, malicious code can get onto a persons computer if it is not fully protected.

To wonder why they think anyone will click on their link is the same as why do we keep getting junk mail as we all throw it in the bin. Obviously some don't (and that must be quite a lot) otherwise it wouldn't be financially viable. Throw enough mud and some will stick! (Sorry going back to my earlier post! )

Is not so much that the work load is high but that the action of individually vetting members would be time consuming and not naturally very beneficial. Mainly, not very useful. Look at the average spammers profile (largely empty with a slightly garbled email address) and compare that you you average genuine new members profile on joining (largely empty with a slightly garbled email address).

- I like the idea of suspectingly title posts going to an automatic voting system open to long members and will look into it.

- The other thing i have seen done is that members need to generate ten posts before they can post live images or urls.

Im not saying its not possible, that other sites don't do it better than us, or even that we should do better ourselves. Im just saying there isn't an instant magic fix. The forum has grown up over time and i do think we are generally a little behind with the infrastructure development which does make it a bit easier for people to get through and a bit more labour intensive to moderate than i would like but at the moment thats just where we are.

Is the spammer's thought process thus: There must be loads of people out there who have never seen porn, or at least can't be bothered to seek it out, but if I slip a few pics onto a canal forum, they'll find that they like it and I'll have 'em hooked....
I think its more a case of 'i have a new website' 'i would like to promote it to google' 'whats the fastest way i can get a link from a high ranking site to do this' 'high ranking forums.....'

Thanks Daniel

I know a site I am on used to have automatic membership but last Easter (I was on very slow mobile connection with just mod access) and I went onto site and every single current thread had a new posting on which was pure filth. It took me ages to delete said posts due to connection speeds etc but I got there in the end. Against our principles of open instant membership, we now have to vet. But I would not want that to happen again! That was why I asked and of course I realise this is a site with many new members which would make vetting more difficult

It took me 2 years to be accepted on this site.

I'm still not accepted.

Has anyone told that young lady that's supposed to be an exit...

I also see that the number of views of his post is increasing at the rate of approx one every 30 seconds! Although of course that could be him navel-gazing, so to speak.
