It is. If you must be negative get your own thread.

If you don't want healthy debate get your own forum.

The money required to just build such a scheme would never be raised and would never be recouped.

You could never get approval to build a huge waterway (the only profitable waterways are ones that can accommodate big vessels) with large housing developments alongside.

The result would be massively expensive, very ugly and unworkable.

Putting houses along the way wouldn't work ... the first thing the occupants would complain about is all the nasty boats going by ...

Plus ensuring it only rains on the bits of the system on which you need rain ..

People wolud buy the houses because they can watch the boats going by, and because they get a mooing at the bottom of the garden.

Cows at the bottom of the garden?

Hi I think they/we/ the gov/BWB should build a new canal system, 2 canals side by side with flowing water right round Britan in a loop, with east/west crossovers every so far up.

The idea is to have a north flowing canal, and along side a south flowing canal.

These canals would have to be level.

This is the future of canals, let of fire works, loby the gov, BWB take notice of this post.

These canals would link the canals we have now.

Trees could be planted in such a way as to channel the wind behind the traffic, this is easy to do.

Wind turbines (vertical axis) directly driving paddle wheels could cause the water to flow as could channeling water from higher ground.

The flowing water could be cleaned by passing it through reed beds.

The new canals could be payed for by building housing and other infrastructure in the same project. Housing could be built into viaducts and into cuttings.... High value housing at that.

It could be used as a fish farm growing £billions of fish, not to mention ending hose pipe bans there by generating o2 absorbing co2.

Other than calling it the Grand contour canal mk2, perhaps... The New Green Belt... would be a good name.

I'm with you on all this, nice to see someone with enthusiasm, I particularly like vertical axis turbines, essential item on inland waterways, better than all those conventional wind turbines that twirl uselessly and people waste their money on. Your ideas seem quite reasonable to me, the only obstacle is people rubbishing new ideas.

Interesting idea. The USA built the Intercoastal Waterway, from South Florida to New York so that shipping did not have to go into deep water seas.

Having the advantage of loads of space, of course.

Vertical axis wind turbines are nowhere near as efficient, as horizontal axis ones.

Horizontal are more efficient in non turbulent conditions which is where they are successfuly installed, ok on high ground, at sea and in coastal areas where they are designed for. Inland waterways are usually turbulent which is where vertical axis works better. Watch horizontal ones, they are invariably revolving uselessly on their vertical axis, whereas vertical will keep turning.

Vertical axis machines are better in this case because the paddle is vertical axis too, horizontal axis would require worm gear or belt drive or some other complex etc.

More bovine than equine, methinks!

A bit more fluid and glutinous. Equine excrement is much too dry and appears in globular shapes. Bovine faeces are just the job and much more spreadable.

As the post BW funding cut surgests there is a need to make canals profitable.

This post is a step along that rout.

A chaotic retreat? That'd be the normal boater when they realise just how much their licence fee would increase in the pursuit of profit.

To DIRFT you mean surely?? Why would anyone want to go to 'Chav'entry????????

You need some forward power for steering and plenty of reverse. Electric power would be a real option.

The gov could buy the land by compulsory order. The problem is paying for it, public private partnership perhaps, so how are we in the private sector to raise our share of the cash.

A reduction in licence fees means more people can afford boats which means more money for the cafe, and those silly shops which sell straw hats, stickers and ice cream.

Fish farming is big business with a turn over of billions, construction and real estate billions ...on the table, the cost of lorries these days is a lot of money.

A barge moving a container from Southhampton to Edinburgh, with a fuel bill of less than £10 is a competitive form of transport in todays economy.

We just need the new canal and the right size barges (standard road container)

The stock market has been going through the roof right now, investors are investing.

We must get a slice of this pie NOW !
