I think, up there on the Forth, you don't actually relise how crowded it is, down here.

 

There is no room to build a canal, the size you suggest, and, if you want to move a container from Southampton to Edinburgh, there is already a perfectly suitable waterway.....We call it the Channel and North Sea.
