Yesterday we made our way down to Saltersford lock to be ready for our booked locking at 9 am.

Woke to a frosty morning

and got a phone call to tell us that an engineer had been called out to make sure they can operate the lock safely. Just as well we aren't going far today - booked for Dutton at 10 then mooring ready for the MSC tomorrow.

Fingers crossed we are not facing another closure

Yes, we have another closure. Saltersford lock is closed because of a log in the paddle chamber and they await divers which could apparently take weeks to arrange. The stoppage notice says an update on Friday so we will go back to Northwich and wait for that. This means

that our bookings for  marsh and Ellesmere locks and the bridge have to be postponed and presumably we will be back in the 48 hours notice when/if Saltersford gets fixed. .

On the bright side, this enables us to have a meal at the excellent Bowling Green .

I bet Manchester Divers (or Chester Divers) could have it cleared in minutes. They dive on wrecks and work in more confined spaces than a lock.

Any delays would be down to C&RT wanting method statements, H&S review, sight of insurance etc etc.

One would have thought CRT would have suitable contractors on a call off contract where all this type of paperwork is already on file. All that should be needed is a quick review of the risk assessment to see if there are any additional hazards for the specific task and location not already covered by the generic version, then a verbal instruction to proceed followed by an email confirmation for both party's records.

I don't think.it is am unusual event for C&RT to have divers out to the weaver locks 🙂

In which case - why ???????????????????

Probably because it was a person

In the office being cagey. I have since heard that the divers will be here on Friday, hopefully. 💪

Think of it as a challenge and building resilience.

I ran out of resiliance today at Lock 7 (Broadbottom) on the Rochdale amd called  the CRT,. Nice chaps, but it was pitch dark when they turned up.

So i have reversed out of lock, moored up, and poured a large Famous Grouse,  strangely tastes much better than did yesterday when it was just an ordinary day.

Roast duck for din-dins :)

My Dad had a bakehouse in Glasgow.

New Year he allocated space to cook steak pies, these were ashet  pies., came from a few butchers locally,  it was a traditional New Year dinner.

And fabulous.

Steak pies are a bit different down here. Not ashet pies but round with party top and bottom. The pastry used by the butcher here is excellent  and their sausage rolls are also excellent

Now we get a chance to visit them again 😃

Others will be totally confused.

I miss my Scotch pies.

Bells make mutton pies, but to be appreciated scotch mutton pies need to be out of the oven and on to the plate within 15 minutes. Thery should be juicy and flavoursome,.

Special pies were 11p and ordinary pies were 9p when i was 12y.o..

When the vanman arrived at our shop we were inundated with customers on a Saturday morning at 11.45.

By 1.45m the shop was nearly empty.

Football started at 2.00pm

Parkhead /Parkheid aka Paradise was just down the road...

You were 12 years old in the era of p rather than d?

You might be right, it was £ s d,

I learned my arithmetic /  my sums, sorting out the shop takings, sorting piles of florins and half crowns in to little piles.
