Another emergency gate repair on the Four Counties. Hack Green from 24th June to 3rd July.

This demonstrates my supernatural ability to predict the future:

...or maybe CRT's asset inspectors are incompetent. This was barely usable in the middle of last year (I phoned at the time about it and know I wasn't the only one) and yet they did nothing to it over the winter.

There's also a restriction to replace a stop gate at Knighton which has 'deteriorated'. https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notices/28517-knighton-safety-gate-newport

After Tryley and Etruria that's four planned 'emergency' gate repairs/replacements on the ring in six weeks of summer, plus the failure at Brick Kiln.

I commented that was a stoppage waiting to happen when we came through about 3 weeks ago, the “locals” also waiting in the queue said it had been like that for “years”.  Water was pouring out under the bottom gate and it was difficult/slow to make a level, hence the queue.

  • 3 weeks later...

Currently in Nantwich and thinking of last minute cruise down to secret bunker at Hack Green.   Is the winding hole useable ?  I would have thought so but now looking at CRT diagram the red line extends beyond the winding hole to the North and beyond lock 1 to the south.    It's a long way to reverse back to Nantwich .

"We're very sorry for any disruption you may experience as a result of these works. We understand how disruptive stoppages are outside of the stoppage season".

The stoppage season? A useful concept.

Maybe CRT has four seasons - WinterMooring, Boating, Water Shortage and Stoppage.

The boating season runs (or rather hiccups) from Easter to July. Rather like the old BW response to queries as to why boating was almost impossible for singlehanders ("We don't expect people to do this on their own"), CRT don't expect anyone would be daft enough to want to take their boat out the rest of the year. That's not what the licence is for.

Just rang CRT not expecting an answer on a Sunday but confirmed, winding hole is also out of action.  So it's a day in Nantwich,  there are worse places to spend a day I guess.     A couple of hire boats went down last night not aware of closure.

No you aren't and no you foooking don't, else you would fix them during the winter.

They probably looked at the red line on the computer
