Dead fish on Trent and Mersey

Featured Posts

A lot of dead fish this morning on The Trent and Mersey particularly in the short stretch between Barnton Tunnel and Saltersford Tunnels. Lesser numbers to the west of Saltersford.

Is this due to lower oxygen levels with the hot level or something more sinister?

I have messaged CRT but not had a reply yet.

We passed lots of dead fish yesterday on the T&M near Colwich, shortly after a section that they were dredging. There's an interesting article in this months Waterways World about dredging and how it temporarily reduces the oxygen in the water, particularly when it's done in the summer when the water is warmer.

Apparently Salford Quays has been full of dead fish the past couple of days. EA says that it's a result of low oxygen levels in the water due to the hot weather.

Maybe they should allow increase speed limits to churn it up a bit?  :)

Apparently shortage of oxygen in water not only deprives fish of oxygen but it upsets the biological balance of the water which is what kills fish. A lot of garden ponds have suffered fish losses recently.

Which CRT and contractors have known for years, the dredging on the Weedon -Whilton stretch was abandoned several years ago for the same reasons.....and never completed.

A major concern when dredging on the Norfolk Broads
