Upwell MLN   Compare  1970s   16Sep2017

My High Street! The shop is still there and now incorporates the Post Office after the proper post office, a little off-picture to the right, closed down. The former chapel was owned at that time by a London bloke known as Dangerous Brian with alleged gangland connections who ran a removals business (of household effects, not people). September Rose I remember well, it was occupied by a red-haired bloke and his girlfriend, and later moved to a berth in Fox's Marina. It had a Lister engine, so you heard it before you saw it.

The third picture shows the village staithe, as wharves are known in these parts. Since you took the snap, the Five Bells Inn (back centre) has closed down, been refurbished, opened again and is now closed pending conversion into the dreaded Apartments.

By 2007, Trojan would have been on our end-of-garden mooring between Marmont Priory Lock and the high street, it's a pity you didn't photograph her as you went past!

Bedford Great Ouse

Taking on fuel on the  Seine. after our visit to a shipyard west of Paris.. These guys were fairly robust with their technique: it seemed to be all or nothing. Shortly after the picture was taken our tamk overflowed and the side deck was, briefly, several centimetres deep.In response, a  powdered antidote that they carried on board was distributed in quantity to  clear up the mess. As their stock of this was considerable it can be assumed such spillages are a regular event.

spacer.pngDid wonder about this device from the bank being needed to help someone in the water. Would phoning 999 for the fire service (assuming the charged mobile to hand), then exchanging the number on the sign for the code for the lock, and working out the instructions for the throwline or rescue poll, all happen before the casualty was carried out of reach of the rescue poll

A French commercial boat family meal at the end of the day. Bit different to the back cabin of the butty! Photo from Facebook

Twenty five years ago, I gave an illustrated talk to a retired group of boatmen on the River Main, in Germany. There was a sharp intake of breath when I showed a picture of a narrowboat cabin with family.

How did you get a photo without the rain?

We managed to just about dodge the rain as we walked along and then went in the Boat House to stay dry.
