  1. Water tank. Integral tanks are not a maintenance problem and are perfectly fine for storing drinking water. Checked occasionally and re blacked when needed. Stainless and plastic tanks waste loads of space, massively reduced capacity. I have seen more stainless tanks with bacterial growth, pink greasy stuff often, than integral bitumen painted ones. Sand/grit blasting. They are joking, who would you find willing to do such a stupid thing INSIDE a boat shell? Two seconds after starting they would not be able to see, and the abrasive would destroy the fit out and the operative would not be happy!
  2. The Canaline engines are the same configuration as the BMC1.8D, not a lot different than the BMC1.5D, it is a drop in swap for the 1.8D. They are adaptable to fit your existing gearbox, that saves money. Now very popular with hire fleets. As I know that the 1.5D swap requires only the engine mount heights to be packed up I would suggest that this is the easiest and most straightforward swap However you will be very lucky to find a second hand one I would think and new will exceed your budget.
  3. Excessive draw on a flue is often controlled with a draught diverter flap in the flue. They are balanced so that they are closed when the draw is normal but will swing open if the draught up the flue is excessive. I would be concerned about fitting one on a short flue in a boat as potentially if incorrectly adjusted they could spill products of combustion into the boat. They are mostly fitted on long oil and gas fired boiler flues to prevent excessive draw leading to incorrect combustion or outage of the burner.
  4. What an offer! There are some nice people on here. This could be a good introduction to smartphone technology for me.
  5. 7-8 A will run sod all, outboards will not charge batteries if anything is in use, its like rubbing two sticks together.
  6. If heads are not retorqued, failures are likely. I know of no manufacturer who thinks that retorquing is not require following repair.
  7. Using a bow thruster to steer a boat is not a sensible thing to do, A ) because it doesn't work, B ) your battery will go flat before you have chance to recharge it. I have never tried a GRP in high wind , prefer to follow what others do and stay tie up until it abates. But I have never experienced any problem with a steel narrowboat except one occasion when we had to winch it off the bank to get into locks, but the day was stupid, we should not of been out.
  8. Down load the manual here http://the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/downloads/bmc1500L-diesel-workshop-manual.pdf Page 48 is the injector fitting showing the washers Basically you should have 2 copper washers with the same outside diameter. on with a larger inside diameter, a top hat heat shield and a crimp steel washer. In a completely empty injector hole the order is as follows. 1 the copper washer with the larger inside diameter 2 The top hat heat shield through this washer 3 the other copper washer on the top of the heat shield 4 the steel washer down into the heat shield 5 the injector.
  9. That sounds like a possible solution. I never realised that they would do anything without a sim, how does it charge for data use?
  10. I had a horrible feeling that it was. I think therefore I "think" I need one. Sounds familiar, heard that somewhere else.
  11. Due to my ignore list I am losing the thread here, its a problem but I can live with it. The alternative is bedlam. Futurama? Picking up on quotes, the budget is as little as practicable, the "dumb" phone which I think is anything but, will remain the prime communicator. The smart is for the other clever things, GPS and hence speed, star patterns, pictures etc. In fact what I need is not a 'phone but a Wifi connected computer small enough to fit in a pocket but does such a thing exist?
  12. I accepted this limitation when doing fit outs, its impossible to comply with the separation in a manner that is going to be accepted by the owner. I run circuits wherever possible far enough apart and away from gas pipes in obviously different cables, Blue arctic for 240v and colour coded singles and twin flex for 12v circuits. The 240v go up against the outer steel under gunnels in pvc oval tubing, the 12v on the inside of the wall panelling in trunking. Where they have to cross one another to go over the roof or the mains to sockets in the wall panelling I run both in short lengths of conduit where they cross. I think that this is as close as I can practically get to the letter of the requirements. Not had any knock backs.
  13. Now see, this is my problem. We already have a conflict of opinion. Why would I as an idiot find the iphone more user friendly please? Is it like an ipad that drives me crazy already? I find it anything but friendly. I can happily use a not bang uptodate bit of kit, 'cos I am far from uptodate myself but if one is easier than the other it matters. My only experience of a smart phone was a new Samsung the wife bought. She is on PAYG and this silly phone could not be made to accept more credit 'cos the screen locked before you could enter the numbers. It went back as they were all like that. A Samsung cock up, could not be fixed, and she bought a Nokia which is not smart.
  14. I thought they were cheaper than £100 used, what is a fair price for a good one, dents accepted as long as it works?
  15. All I have to go on is that I struggle with the wife's ipad. Is android anything like windows 10 which I nearly understand?
  16. Oh dear, more complication. Whats the pros and cons of iphone and androids? Assume total ignorance please!
  17. It has been said that my Nokia 1200 is no longer considered to be a 'phone despite the fact that it makes calls and does SMS. ( getting technical, did you see what I did there? ) Seems that todays 'phone has to connect to the internet thingy and take thousands of pictures of myself, food and peoples' feet that are never viewed again otherwise it is useless. So its time to ask for recommendations as to which smart phone a complete dinosaur boater like me should buy out of the myriad mountain of ones available, new and used to be considered worthy. Consider my fat fingers too, I just about cope with a laptop keyboard. Can you have a smart phone on pay as you go? With being absent from the UK for months on end am I better with PAYG or a contract whatsit? HELP !
  18. We had some expensive all leather ones, not Stressless, and they lasted 16 years. They collapsed in the seat eventually and the arms fell apart. I was concerned that according to customer reviews Stressless seemed to be in a bad patch quality wise so when we wanted replacements it was decided to buy less expensive and replace more often if necessary. To this end we bought from Lloyds Pharmacy two pvc £99 ones. They have so far, 4 years in, been extremely comfortable and durable and we are delighted with them. At these prices we can change them at a whim whereas when you have paid £2570 each for the best they have to last forever.
  19. Excellent point, you could have PMed me, now I look like the silly old sod that I am. Well done. But can the handle be removed with it turned on? That's the rub. I suspect not...................................................... Well, it seems that it can never be removed anyway! That's another Piperism for the book.
  20. Why would any sane person, and I thought you just may be, want a hard copy of the drivel published on here? ?
  21. Would they own up to it if they had? Would you ever get rid of the smell?
  22. Not one of mine. Cheshire, it has a plain. Wilmslow and Nether Alderley for millionaire footyballers, the Peovers; Superior: Over; Lower, salt, cheese, and Me! We seem to of hijacked this thread, never mind it was getting absolutely nowhere. Sorry Athy
