The boat is out of proportion because they have had to increase the height of the cabin roof, cutting it off the sides and letting in an extra 12" of cabin side so that there is still enough headroom below the flue in the galley.

I expect that a small diameter wire rope that rubs along the armco as boats pass will wear through a few strands, which will then lift and make a good source of finger piercing sharp pointed objects. Wire rops is great but rubbing contact is not its forte.

We went through Poolstock in April and again in May and the levels were much better than the same time last year. The water was right up to the bywash weir level, although not much was going over the bywashes.

Grand Union Canal water transfer scheme latest

Devils advocate, taking full width and deep widebeam as a worst case. Have to consider the worst case not the average modern shallow 12'6" eurocruiser -
Grand Union Canal water transfer scheme latest
PeterF replied to Tim Lewis's topic in Waterways News & Press
I did a calc and agree with the 0.5mph. However, put put a full sized wide beam in the tunnel taking up lets say 75% of the available flow area and if the widebeam is stationary the current will be 2mph to get around the boat let alone make any headway. Therefore, the boat will not make any progress at low cruising revs. Has CRT thought about this yet or have I got something wrong. -

I have also had this occur. As noted above I have now made sure that the setting for the solar controller is at 14.5V, 0.1V lower than the alternator when the batteries are fully charged (14.6V) so it does not occur now.

Calder & Hebble locks are outside a lot of boaters experience. We were based in the Shepley Bridge / Brighouse area for many years and witnessed a close cilling, got the bottom paddles shut as it started to tip, the boater thought the skeg had been bent a bit but that was all. We have seen at least 2 bent tillers when boats stayed at the back of the lock ascending due the the large walkways to get to the paddle gear. Our own experience has included a hang up on protruding iron / brickwork on the Rochdale and Diggle flight on the HNC. Our first boat that this occurred on had a Birmingham square hull, all the better for catching uneven lock sides going down. I made sure the current boat was not a square hull.

One issue on the Huddersfield Narrow when I was based in that area was one of the locations where two locks were close together with a short pound between. The lower lock had badly leaky bottom gates. When going uphill you would go up the lower lock, but due to the leak leave the lock and ground the boat on the upper cill. If you grounded the front of the boat on the cill, then as the bottom gates were leaking the water level continued to fall, the rear of the boat drops and goes under. You can not close the upper gate, the only way out is to try and let water down. Similar effect to the boat getting the rudder trapped between the two bottom gates holding the stern down.

It looks like the boat we met on the T&M a couple of years ago when it was new. AFAIR there was a father and son on it and they were German. It was also hybrid / electric from memory.

Bronte boats from Hebden Bridge came out to my boat in Brighouse a 6 years or so ago to clean the fuel, he had the kit in his van to do this. Give them a ring and see if they still do this. https://www.bronteboathire.co.uk/service-repairs/ 01706 815103. You could also try Shire Cruisers but I have no idea if they do fuel polishing or not.

We have stopped the night before at Litherland, short trip to Stanley locks from there. With the regularity that Hancocks's (aka Hancock's or Wango Lane) swing bridge seems to fail I would prefer to go through it the day before the link was booked just in case. Leave it to the morning of the link booking and if it fails then you will miss your booking. Good advice to empty cassettes / pump out at Litherland.

I had a lever on a Teleflex come loose, there was a small grub screw that needed an allen key to tighten it up. The plastic cover had to come off, but this was years ago so can not recall the detail. Look on line for a manual for your control and it may show this sort of item and how to get to it.

My wife buys the ecover brand washing detergent and washing up liquid (but it is not sachet) as it is meant to be more eco friendly.

Also is it the whole assembly (lever and box) coming loose from the boat structure or just the lever coming loose on its shaft.

Recognising you from previous posts, yours is a new Collingwood sail away so I do not expect that you have anything in terms of sound proofing and have a cheap minimum cost small silencer on the exhaust (do check you actually have one). On our current boat we have some of the acoustic foam lining with polymeric layer that IanD linked to above under the deck boards. We also put a strip of self adhesive neoprene around the edge of the deck boards where they sit on the support channels to remove any air gaps that sound can escape through. The largest contribution however is having specified a hospital silencer before the build commenced. When on tick over we often get asked if we are electric (No). You may like to consider one if there is room to retrofit one. https://www.midlandchandlers.co.uk/products/ag-hospital-silencer-12-x-32-with-1-1-2-bsp-male-ports-ea-008 A previous boat with a cruiser stern had the engine bay air intakes in the rear cabin bulkhead facing backwards directed towards the steering position, a box mounted over these with the opening pointed away from the steering position and lined with acoustic foam reduced the noise escaping from these.

Is that the sign that days empty the lock slowly, only half paddles until the lock is half empty. Presumably because of the raft of Anderson hire boats often below the lock.

engine dials Which dials are most useful/useless you swear by?

Domestic battery voltmeter and ammeter so you know when they have been fully charged. -

Dymo tape -
Fenders not of any use in Standedge tunnel because the narrow bits that catch your boat are not at the water line, they are bits that stick out at taff rail or cabin corner height because the tunnel shape is so irregular and was not cut for boats with cabins per todays boats.

water pressure issues (but only cold)
PeterF replied to ajonesy's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
If you have already cleaned and checked the shower mixer and replaced it and it still does the same I am with Tony that you have a restriction elsewhere in your system. The other area for a restriction is in the shower hose and spray head, especially if you are in a hard water area, the nozzles cab block. -

Dodgy thermostatic shower mixer closing off the water when it gets to temperature so the only way to get any water is to set the temperature gauge hotter than the water, or at full so it can not close. Is water from the cold supply getting to it. Some mixers have a fine gauze strainer on the inlet unions, remove the mixer and check for blockages. While the mixer is off put it full cold setting and try to blow air, flush water through from a hose and then the same for full hot setting. Then repeat the process and blow / flush backwards from the shower hose connection. -
One chance of queues is Stanthorne lock on the Middlewich branch which has limit stops on the bottom gate paddles which make it very slow to empty. We have been in 7 boat queues several times that take 90 + minutes to get through. Oddly enough the longest queues that develop are going downhill, I have never been held up for long going uphill. Do more people do the four counties ring clockwise.
