  1. Taking various tips from the car detailing forums, I splashed out on a dual action polisher and a paint thickness meter. With some polish, pads, clay bars etc you are looking at £400, but set that against a repaint and it is a cheap solution. I am pleased with the results so far. The meter shows that a quality paint job is very thick compared to a typical car, and the paint is harder (on our boat anyway) so you don't take much off at all with a coarse compound and pad. Thus there is plenty of scope to do it again next year......
  2. Find the nearest doctor's surgery and ask to register as a temporary patient. They may object to this, in my recent experience, if you are expecting to stay in the area more than a couple of weeks. In that case register as a new, permanent patient, but be aware that in both cases they will want the details of the surgery where you were last permanently registered. Or, depending on what is wrong with you, look for the nearest "walk in" centre, or ulitimately the nearest hospital A & E.
  3. It looked to me that mooring immediately outside the old office, i.e. on the non-towpath side, was the best option. There was another boat there during our visit, so no room, but this area is secured by a fence and a (CRT?) padlocked gate.
  4. We moored opposite the old office, towpath side, on Friday. We were woken at 3 in the morning by a noise, so I looked out the side hatch to see a mountain bike on the towpath, adjacent to our bow. Whilst my sleepy brain was trying to work out where the owner of the bike might be, he appeared with his torch in hand - from under our cratch cover! He made off on the bike, with my voice ringing in his ears. The two police personnel who attended this morning said that there had been a number of similar incidents, and petty thefts from boats on that stretch, in the dry dock, and from the apartments that back onto the towpath. So maybe it would be best to moor on the opposite side, by the old CRT office. Signage is improving for the new office, which can best be described as a sited at the Pier end of Trencherfield Mill, on the first floor. Mike
  5. We visited Winsford "Marina" this week. The new moorings, opposite the water point, were too shallow for us at 30". We got onto the end of the older moorings OK. Another boat had trouble mooring behind us, but was OK after he discovered the road works barrier lurking below his stern! As mentioned, the decking is lethal in the wet. There appeared to be no rubbish disposal facilities
  6. I used one in the sixties on a variety of BMC A & B series engines. It was very effective, mainly because the engines were pretty worn, and it got around the problem of the rocker pads being slightly indented. If I recall correctly, there is a way of working out the number of clicks if you know the thread dimensions of the adjustment screw, and the clearance you are trying to achieve.
  7. Yes, bubbling is normal when equalising. Without a hydrometer or, better still, a refractometer is is going to be guesswork as to how the actual process is going. I will stick my finger in the air and say a couple of hours should do it.

  12. Did you get to the hydrometer/refractometer shop that was mentioned umpteen posts ago? Now is the time to measure the SG of each cell, of each battery. That will tell you if further charging is worthwhile, if further equalisation is required, and if you have any duff cells. FWIW we have the same charger as you and 4 trojan T105s which are still in good nick. With the Smartguage at 75%, it takes a minimum of 6 hours on the mains to get to 100% and the charger dropping onto float.

    Our 2LW is exactly the same. No go when cold, needs a good warm up, particularly if the domestic battery bank is low and the alternator is working hard.
  15. A 12v rectifier from a motorcycle is used to get DC (Direct Current) from an AC (Alternating current) source, such as an alternator. If you fitted the 12V socket to the batteries then you should not need a rectifier, as the supply from the batteries is already DC. If the laptop charger is designed to work off a cigarette lighter socket in a car, then it won't be damaged when your engine is running, as it is designed to work off the sort of voltages produced by a car alternator (say up to 14.5 volts or a little more).
  16. If using a Windows machine, try downloading a copy of Network Stumbler. It will provide you with lots of information about the wireless networks around you, including ones that broadcast on the same channels.

If you look at certain Garmin models, usually those that are primarily for walking/hiking, you will see that you can get Ordnance Survey mapping to display on them, which can be useful on the canal especially when using Nicholson's guides. However AFAIK this mapping is not "routable", so for use in the car, you will also need to able to load one of the "City Navigator" products. This is the mapping that will talk to you, and route you between postcodes etc, it also contains Point Of Interest information, i.e. where the supermarkets and fuel stations are. Another point when buying a new Garmin - is to make sure the model number ends in LM. This will ensure that the unit is entitled to download up to date mapping during its lifetime (without further payment), making the unit more useful for your period ownership, and worth a bit more if you want to sell it on.
  18. I've just looked at ours. The bypass out goes straight to the calorifier circuit, with the return teed into the skin tank return before the oil cooler. So Tony's suggestion of a valve or restriction in that vertical pipe down to the pump is right on the money.
  19. Our 2LW is similarly fed from the bypass loop, but I don't have that "T" junction that is in the picture. Where does the vertical pipe go to that runs downwards off the "T"?
  20. We have 6 X 100W semi flexible panels wired in series pairs and then paralled into an Outback 60 MPPT. In spring and summer we were seeing 30 amps regularly and persistently and getting over 1 Kwh per day. Since the beginning of October, maybe a little earlier, we have only been seeing a max of 6 amps and less than .3Kwh per day. I am fairly convinced that the reduction in output is down to the sun never getting high enough in the sky at this time of year. We used the generator on the towpath for the first time this year on Tuesday, and immediately had a moan from the boat moored behind about the noise!!
  21. I have recently used http://www.quietpc.com/casefans and can recommend them. You will see that they provide details of the amount of air shifted by the various models, the current draw, and the noise generated. The fans fitted in 2002 by the boat builder drew 2.1 amps and were very noisy. I replaced with some drawing .1 amps, shifting nearly as much air, and virtually silent - the technology has certainly moved on.........
  22. Buying a 3 PAYG mifi can be a relatively cheap way of getting an unlocked device with aerial sockets (Three no longer lock new devices to their network AFAIK). You can then use PAYG sims from other networks to compare reception at your site, and maybe try cheap aerial (you'll need two for 4G). If you conclude that EE gives you the best speed, then see if there are any offers on free data sims, as the most recent provided 100GB a month for two months. Or consider a sim only PAYG contract with your chosen provider.
