  1. Cleaning the fuel injector pump driving gear lubricator and lubricator filter was listed as a necessary part of the 6,000 mile / 10,000km or 6 monthly service by BMC / British Leyland for the 1.5 diesel . I suspect not many such engines in narrowboats get that much attention.
  2. Unfortunately I do not have a MGB workshop manual I got rid of that when I sold my MGB . It is the workshop manuals that gives the dimensions for seat angle and height to head face . If it is any help the 1.5 diesel seat face angle is 45 degrees the same as the 1500 and 1622 petrol engines . The exhaust valve head diameter for the diesel is shown as 29.2 - 29.4 mm. Have you tried Ebay for cheaper 1.5 diesel spares ? Often bargains to be found compared to chandlers .
  3. The MGB parts book I have relates to the later 1976 rubber bumper cars and the part numbers for the valve guides are inlet 12H 222, exhaust 12B 1339 . The BMC 1.5 diesel parts book I have relates to the J2 van which was fitted with 1500cc and 1622cc petrol engines plus the 1.5 diesel . The exhaust valve guides on the petrol and diesel engines are all the same part number namely 11G 193, The inlet valve guides are different namely 11G 313 for the petrol engines and 11G 193 [ same as exhaust] for the diesel. I also have a Brown Brothers Motor Factors catalogue from the early 60's and looking at the part numbers for the 1964 MGB exhaust valve guides and the 1963 J4 1.5 diesel engine exhaust valve guides and they are the same namely James part number G2616S .The actual valves have different part numbers .
  4. I think the answer is they are not the same . The reason I say that is I have parts books for the BMC 1.5 diesel and the MGB and the part numbers are different . The 1.5 inlet valve is part number 12H 212, and exhaust 12H 213 . The MGB inlet valve is 12H 4211 and exhaust CAM 1717.

  6. If my memory serves me correct there are usually two different sized rubber rings in the box with the new oil filter , one thicker than the other . Are you sure you have fitted the correct one ? I've got a huge collection of these spares on my boat from the number of times I have changed my oil filter although I've now fitted a spin on conversion so even got a complete spare filter with housing now.
  7. Out of interest who built the shell of your boat ? In my opinion a 17 year old boat should not need a new baseplate if it has been maintained correctly . My interpretation of maintained correctly includes having the baseplate blacked , although many on this Forum claim it is not necessary .

  13. I've run my BMC 1.5 diesel for well over 30 years without an air filter so you have nothing to worry about.
  14. If it has taken 30 years for 2mm pits to develop then assuming it continues at that rate it will rust through in 60 years time. If it was mine I would wire brush the rust off and then treat with Vactan before applying quality blacking . I would then repeat the process every two years .With luck the Vactan will slow up any future pitting . I'm not sure how insurers arrived at a figure of 4mm minimum steel thickness for comprehensive insurance particularly as I believe some some boats start off with 4mm steel albeit not newly built narrowboats.
  15. We all know the real reason boatyards don't black the baseplate is most yards cannot get the boats high enough to be able to get underneath .

  17. At my boat club [ The Middle Nene Cruising Club ] the mooring fees for my 45 ft narrowboat were £35 in 1991, I still have the same boat and mooring , last year the fees were £240. Club membership fees obviously need to be added to that.

  20. More importantly has it got a composting toilet and if it has how were the sellers / renters / new buyer disposing of the solids ?
  21. Hopefully you will send an e-mail to the Chief Constable drawing his attention to the excellent service you received from one / some of his officers . Plenty of people criticise the police I'm sure he will welcome a letter expressing your appreciation.
  22. There is a Youtuber making a series called The narrowboat that James built. On the 10th January this year he devoted a whole video headed 'Which narrowboat toilet is best ?' He describes Pump out toilets, cassettes and composting toilets . He bought a Simploo composting toilet for £320 because he wasn't prepared to pay for pump outs or have tanks fitted and didn't want to buy chemicals for a cassette. He claims he will go several weeks composting his poo and then bag it up and put it in a bin. I suspect many watching this video do exactly the same and for the same reason , namely to save money. Composting he certainly wont be.

  24. That takes me back , Brown Brothers . Actually I've still got one of their huge catalogues and what you described was called a cylinder leakage tester and cost £34 in the late 60's. A nostalgic read a Brown Brothers catalogue for anyone that was in the motor trade in that era.
