  1. Although it was a couple of hours before the supposed 20.30 curfew you should allow for the fact that he may be over 250 years old and was there before the canal was built.

  2. If it's necessary to run your engine or genny (and I have no problem with either) why moor close to someone's home ? I avoid mooring by houses wherever possible as a matter of courtesy. Cruise as necessary. If you need to moor for shops or services, turn your engine off, and if you've not run the engine for long enough, then move on until you have, or you're away from peoples home's. The problem is entirely avoidable with a little consideration. Just my view, others are available. Rog

  5. Yes, they are not that clever, they are an army of box-ticking-buck-passing jobsworths operating a complex system designed to require a layer of highly paid management to oversee the system. Sir Humphrey prevails.

  6. I think you are right, If it gets dropped and broken it could cause a spark, I have an electric garage door and the key fob in my pocket got pressed for an extended time and that got quite hot. When I worked Offshore we had to remove batteries from electrical items put in the helicopter hold because of the fire risk.

  8. I used the standards available on line from the library in 2006. When I asked for the librarians' help it was not a novelty - the system was well established. In the previous millenium I regularly visited my company's library to borrow copies of BS and international standards, but I can't recall doing so since 1998. Again you seem to be saying that you couldn't be bothered to research their availability from your library. What you are saying is that you confirm you made a Declaration of Conformity for the RCD, issued a builder's plate with CE marking, got a CIN from the RYA, without actually knowing if your boat complies - as you say: The only thing that I know of that would 'fail' the RCD .......... but you don't actually know the requirements of the standards you haven't bothered to source. You say : The boat is full of stuff like that and in the end it became obvious that to use the RCD as any sort of guide is next to impossible. It seems you have entirely missed the point of the RCD. Everything in your boat should comply with the relevant Standard, and the RCD is not responsible for defining what those standards might be. It cannot be anything other than a generalisation with regard to such matters. Because you don't understand the process and can't be bothered to ensure compliance does not make the process 'pretty meaningless' . However in your case your pretence at attempting to conform certainly appears to be meaningless. It seems that you confirm that your Builder's Plate and CIN have been produced/obtained fraudulently.

  12. Having been away from uk for 30 years i return to find a totally different culture. Selfishness seems to pervade. The population of dog lovers and dogs has increased many fold. The selfish mentality of dog lovers is much the same as smokers, they think everyone loves dogs and dogshit. Their mentality is questionable when it needs laws to stop 'intelligent' dog owners from poluting the pathways, byways and countryside. If dogs are so smart, train them to pick up their own poo or use a doggy litter like the cat does. Oh England, my England, what have they done to you?

  14. Big range in computer fans, both in price and air flow. What you are looking for only needs a very small amount of airflow, so go for one that has the lowest rating you can find. It shouldn't need to draw more than about 100 ma at 12V. Maplins or ebay will give you plenty of choices. You can also get small relays in Maplins which you could use to just switch it on when something else runs. Assuming oyu haven't got a lot of wet bilges etc, it only needs an hour or so a day, just to change the air. Think about where the air will come from as well, and whether you will have it suck or blow. You may not even need a fan at all, just some vents placed in suitable locations. My underbed storage space has no fans and has no mould. Slats under the mattress help, both to reduce condensation under the mattress from your body and to help ventilate the storage area.

  19. Thanks Stegra, I appreciate your considered response and sharing your experience. You make a lot of valid points. If you dont mind me asking, are you paying a similar price for a similar service as I have outlined or is yours significantly different?
