SKIPTON DREDGING

The pictures in the OP (and the one above) aren't the Springs Branch though, they are the main navigation through Skipton. (unless stuff has washed out of the branch into the Canal???)

Land and Water have headed on down past the facilities wharf now so it doesn't look like they are going to do the Springs Branch or they would have done that while they were passing surely.

I think the dredging crew were up Springs Branch on Tuesday 19th, Ian from pennine was moving his boats on to the moorings at the back of the bus station as we arrived in Skipton. Rudely awoken on Wednesday morning as the dredger tried to navigate his way under the footbridge, as his machine was too high to get under,(must have struggled at some of the other bridges) he used the bucket, dug into the bottom of the canal to pull down the end of the barge he was sat on, then pushed himself under.

The resulting effect of one end of the barge dropping back into the water caused a right old wave, chucking us all over. Complained loudly out of the side hatch.

Anyway, it turned out that the dredger 3 pans and 2 tugs went from Skipton to bridge 192 the other side of Silsden to clear a silted up section, we met them on our way back from Skipton.

As far as I know the dredging has been from Gargrave to Skipton, the spoils were being loaded on to wagons in a field next to Niffany moorings.

Does anyone know if the planned renewal of Niffany swing bridge is going ahead? Its on the winter stoppages list but it was also on the list last winter and nothing was done. We are planning a trip in March and the timing depends on whether or not we can get through Niffanys.

Your right, it was on last years & this years stoppages. Even though it was not replaced last year, it was not that bad to use, according to my wife. we passed through a couple of times last year.

Completely off topic -

We once 'gate crashed' a wedding at that hotel as we boated past. The photographer was using the (just out of shot) swing bridge for the photographs. I'm not sure if we appeared in the wedding album but as we were on a slightly scruffy hire boat at the time probably not...
