12v USB charger wall plate

Featured Posts

I'd like to me to install a couple of USB charging points on (inside) the boat, 12v powered, recessed with a reasonably pleasant facia. Can't immediately find any and the forum search tool doesn't do words of less than 4 letters so searching for USB gives zero results, as does "12v USB". Any suggestions please?

I'm also going to report this post in the hope that changing the search engine rulesto allow 3 letter words is considered.

There's a couple of things out there. They might not win any design awards mind...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-Dual-Waterproof-USB-Car-Cigarette-Lighter-Socket-Charger-Power-Adapter-/391095295683?hash=item5b0f189ec3

http://www.12voltplanet.co.uk/12v-24v-recessed-twin-usb-power-socket-5v-21a.html

You could always use something like this : http://www.alectro.co.uk/Pages/USB-Wall-Plates.html, and hard wire it into one of the above items hidden behind the panel?

I used one of these:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Individual-wood-treasure-chest-WC496-6-sizes-to-chose-from-box-storage-trinket-/251959667917?var=&hash=item3aa9f76ccd

Looks OK with a nice coat of varnish.

And fitted it with a twin USB and ciggy lighter socket:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12v-Motorcycle-bike-Cigarette-Lighter-Plug-Waterproof-USB-Power-Socket-Adapter-/171384348583?var=&hash=item27e74d9fa7

That way you can charge two USB devices and additionally anything that still uses a lighter socket plug.

Edited to say that as it was installed inside the boat, I took the protective caps off.

Edited again to say that the blue led is excellent illumination for those nocturnal visits to the bog...

Thanks for your report, however the minimum search length is currently set to two (2) so three letter words should not be an issue? PM sent to secure more information.

We fitted a few of these earlier this year.

http://www.seascrew.com/browse.cfm?s=1451601

and also a double socket that has a USB charging point and a fag lighter type socket.

They have proven to be very handy so far.

We have a couple in the cockpit that can be prone to a bit of sea spray but they seem to cope fine with it with the bungs in.

Have a look in your local branch of Halfrogs - or check out: http://www.halfords.com/motoring-travel/car-accessories/interior-car-accessories/halfords-multi-socket-2x12v-usb-battery-analyser. A fellow boater has one of these on board which he loves/loved. Its going to need to be mounted on something rather than through something but still looks fairly neat (chop the ciggy plug off and wire it in) and has the added advantage that it tells you when the massive power draw of your mobile/mp3 is flattening your battery bank!

I bought an unmounted USB 12 volt manufactured by Landyparts? from Lyons Boatyard and mounted it in a blank polished chrome plated together with LED and switch. I was going to install it to replace one of the 12 volt sockets but it didn't look brilliant so didn't bother. It might have been better/neater if I had access to a workshop and bench rather that doing it on the towpath.

Like others I use a dual cigar lighter USB adapter plugged into a 12 volt socket. However I will be replacing it with http://www.durite.co.uk/itm/Black-USB-Port-Socket-12V/Black-12V-USB-Port-Socket/060108together with the mounting they do and mount it under the gunnels.

Thanks all for suggestions so far. I like the look of Grumpy's wall plate but it is just that a plate with connectors but no electronics to get the 5v from the 12v. The others, whilst functional, lack the aesthetics I am looking for - ie not round, black plastic etc!

You could use this inline to each USB maybe

Yes I might have to go that way, although would still prefer something fully integral. Maybe it doesn't exist!

Ed: I see there are plenty of mains-powered ones and since we tend to have the inverter on all the time, maybe that is the answer.

I do like the look of those, they look very tidy.

We are very pleased with them. Although they are out of sight under the dashboard and under the cockpit table we didn't want them to be ugly and look out of place.

Is this any good, its got all the voltage gubbings within so it says, I order stuff from overseas all the time plus ebay garuntees.

its solar freindly too.

That's the same as I have posted and he doesn't like them!

These look small enough to fit in the pattress of your choice:

I understand its not necessarily quite as easy as putting in 5v between the right pins, and that the phones tend to do a bit of talking to the device to allow full charging speeds.

Maybe helpful , maybe not but you can get normal 240 v sockets with two USB sockets fitted . Screwfix do them for example . I expect they will suit the look your after but whether suitable or not im unsure

The beauty of the others is that they step down 12V to 5V for the USB socket. The 240V sockets step down 240V AC to the relevant 5V DC, therefore you'd need the inverter or shore power etc on all the time.
