Flippin heck. I thought choosing a nozzle, setting the pressure, adjusting the flame and chasing a weld pool about was hard enough. At least I didn't have to know a load of technical jargon to weld with gas

Richard

That's the toned down version :)

The other drawback with not having HF is you don't get a button on the torch, gas flow is controlled by a knob, it's flowing all the time, sort of handy for post flow but a a bit wasteful of gas.

The biggest downfall of not having a button is you can't pulse the arc if it's getting a bit hot and you are about to loose the weld pool. The only thing you can do is ram more filler in and speed your travel up.

You also don't get a slope down current, which means when you take the torch away the weld goes from welding current to zero instantly - not ideal, but as earlier you will get away with it on stuff that's not too fussy.

Parameters for the sort of job you are looking at assuming you use 1.6mm tube would be somewhere near the following.

1.6mm tungsten.

1.6mm 316 filler wire.

6-8 litres per minute gas flow (in a breeze free location!!)

50 ish amps.

Nice sharp tungsten tip - the taper wants to be 3 x the diameter so 5 mm max

No 6 shroud. Cerirated (grey tip) tungstens are ideal - Thoriated (red tip) are out of fashion due to the radioactive dust you get from grinding the tungsten.

You won't go far wrong with that little lot cheers.gif

That infact was enar the setup i was practicing on last time on SS, but 45amps, when i went higher amps it was to much, i moved along a bit faster but then lost the rythem. Thats what it is all about isnt it. correct set up and rythem.

I will the knack, i didnt really need to learn it last time just messing but now i need to.

Lots of welding jargon isnt there Richard, head bashing to get it right at times.

That's the spirit :)

As you say, if your travel speed is lower drop the amps, 40a may suit you better. I like it hot and get a lick on, but that comes with experience.

I'm not going to dig my welding speed feet per minute chart Out, that wants stuffing up the rear end of the pillock who wrote it :)

Get yourself a good pair of gloves too, those baggy white things are hateful.

Can't remember what brand ive got at Work, they were FOC from our new supplier.

It's all about the feel of the filler going thru your fingers.

Blimey !!!!! Just been reading that lot and can feel my eyes beginning to glaze over !

I've got to do a little bit of welding and as I haven't touched my gear for probably 5 years or more (stick/inverter)

I think I will just go and play at sticking some bits of scrap together and make sure I have plenty of filler handy to hide the pigeon droppings !!!!! blush.png

(fortunately it's above the waterline and not load bearing smile.png )

Hi John, modern welding gubbins tends to that to me at times, now gas welding , light, get the correct flame and away you go smile.png

Well that has been a week of this and that, dint get done what i wanted due to weather again but not far off, had a day off aswell to chill. As said i have decided to get a Tig welder to do my own rails for the boat this will be got in a few weeks so until then i can get it painted and fit the rest of the deck gear before i line out the cabin. I am in no panic that it is going to be done for mid next summer launch as i will have all winter fit to out now.

Hang on....lets not get ahead of myself.

Top deck is primed but not the rear end which is going to be done bit by bit this week. What i need to get done is the top screen so todays task was that. The Sapele arrived a few days ago, this is for a few jobs and one is this.

I need to thank Steve ( the barnacle ) again, the SS bolts came in just perfct wink.png

Timber is 43mmx26mm Sapele and the window i made up from cutting and shutting the windows i got the other week. I got the two windows and loads of trim wiht new glass just to make the screen, i got these as they are very similar design as the side windows.

Not the best wood work but good enough for me, I did mess up on the all frame 45 deg cuts but the rest of the frames had big holes drilled, to big for the bolt heads. Cant have it all as i want it guess.

These pics are before it has been glued and sanded, it is now glued and next is the polish of the ally frame, such joys, i need more polish compound now. Pay day week smile.png

Ay up i forgot to say the Sapele will be treated to Danish oil, i was impressed with the last ones so i will do it again, along with the strakes and other areas.

The side frames will be sorted asap, i have the design in my head as usual, front screen will fold back then the two sides inwards on top.
