Sailor cap ?

Dream On

Featured Posts

Hello,

The weather is bad in France at the moment and it rains a lot.
Also, to navigate with my narrowboat, outside, I thought to buy a hat ... but there are dozens of models.
I am looking for a model that resist water and sun.
A hat that looks like a sailor cap for example, as our caps Breton sailors.
But I wondered what the ancients were to drive their boat on British channels ... and you, what is your cap model ? :)
Best regards,
Lau

A knotted at the corners plastic square will keep the rain off change for a hanky on sunny days wear both in winter when hanky will be a thermal lining .

If not suitable then suggest consult with Bizzard for suitable apparel.

The carefree non image driven boaters may simply wear an Aldi or Lidl carrier bag on their heads in the rain. The self concious and image driven boater may wear a Waitrose or in extreme cases a Harrods carrier bag.

Me, I prefer my home made hats.

Hi ya Lau,

Normally, US Britts normally just use the wrapper from our Fish & Chips, We find that the Grease keeps it waterproof, & can be kept in place by an elastic Band or Bungi cord. A look that was actually addopted by the Arabs, But because they had a lack of fish in the Deserts, used Cloth instead, but secured in a similar way.

They also mistook (largely due to the language barrier) Canal Boats of the Waterways & again put thereown twist on it to fit there environment & country, & the phrase 'Camels ships of the Desert' was born. But that's another story.

If you look on the boards recently I think Professer Bizzard has contributed a paper on the very subject of Head adornments, that you may find usefull background reading.

bag of fish & chip! what a great idea! biggrin.png
I do not have it here ... but I think with the box of Camembert, it must be good also biggrin.pngbiggrin.pngbiggrin.pngwink.png
I'll take a look to find Professer Bizzard smile.png Thanks

Obviously only fooling with you, (& Well done you).

Seriously you're best bet would be just to find a hat that suits the purpose you want it for, internet search would be your best bet for that I would think, & going to be much cheaper than a Chandlery.

(& for the record Ime actually had Camembert & Crackers earlier today, followed by Donuts ofcourse icecream.gif )

I would say that the size of one's hat is inversely proportional to one's ability to command the boat. Personally I never wear a hat.

Did Mr Parry fail the test then?

I certainly never saw him wearing it!

Maybe earn wasn't the right description. It's generally handed out as a punishment for heinous boat handling.

Leaving fenders down for a start

Tilley hat - survives been eaten by an elephant should you be unfortunate enough to pass by a hungry one unsure.png

Small point, and completely smiley_offtopic.gif BUT.....the fastest way to wind up a Canadian.....write an review for a product where British, Americans are both spelt using capitals for the A & B and Canadian & Canadian's written in all lower case!!!

Probably written by a red neck yank!

Rant over :)

Bought Dave a new leather hat with full brim and the chin strap that can be tucked up in the top when not cruising on windy days, picked it up on the last day of the Braunston Rally just before closing for a nice price.

Hi all

The latest issue of the Historic Narrow Boat Club magazine carried a poem written by Keith Staley. I think it fits this thread well!

He is the nouveau boater, with shiny paint and brass

And forty horse and thruster, of winding makes a hash

See the weathered live aboard, with logs and bike on top

Who takes up all the moorings, when you decide to stop.

Here's the bold dot comer, who flies a foreign jack

He's off to do four counties, or cruise to hell and back.

The tiny day boat sallies forth, he likes to cut a dash

With kids and dog and Granny, he makes a breaking wash.

A hire boat crew with windlasses, at the lock gate stand

They look at you as you pass through

But never lend a hand

What do they have in common, these jolly water rats?

I'll tell you what it is, my friend, they all wear cowboy hats.

Where did this fashion come from? Did Clint Eastwood buy a boat?

Or did they learn to line dance, before they went afloat?

What would they say, those Number Ones, in trilby or flat cap?

" aye up, me duck, you can't wear that, yer looks a proper prat"

Dave

I seem to remember you were wearing it on arrival at the Buckby Banter last year - pity I didn't take a photo.

I like the poem Dave.

BTW I wear one of these:
