Timleech
does anybody know where weirbin 52950 is now ? It was an RAF refueler. What does it look like? Not a boat, shirley? Tim Edit - yes Jim Shead lists a boat of that name, but how would the RAF use it? Refuelling seaplanes? FadeToScarlet
http://www.jim-shead.com/waterways/boatreg.php?rs=WB&re=WI The RAF ran fast launches during the latter part of WWII to recover aircrew ditched in the English channel. Jim Sheid has Weirbin built in 1944, so it could well have been to refuel the fuel-hungry high speed launches. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Power_Boat_Company_Type_Two_63_ft_HSL Edit to add- seaplanes is also possible, not only the Walrus type used by the Search and Rescue, but also the Sunderland and Catalina flying boats used by RAF Coastal Command. grey wolf
Dunster in Somerset was said to be a base for launches apparently the lakes at the back of Dunster beach were harbour areas.
Chris Davidson
The RAF still used launches for air sea rescue until the late 70's, so there must still be some about somewhere.

Haven't heard of the weirbin or if one of those is a renamed boat.

Steve Well a mile away is coastal enough, surely, especially as "Dunster Beach" separates the village from the sea. Google Maps Clicky
