Mac of Cygnet
Having just been stung for £83 for a tiny temperature sender, I'm keen not to spend even more on a couple of glow plugs for a Vetus M2C5 engine. Is there a generic type I could source? I've managed it with filters, saving about 60% in the process, so is there a site which similarly cross-references these expensive wee beasties? JerryP
i'd try going to some motor factors and see if anything they stock match's what you need.
Biggles
They don't make the engines just the marinising parts so you need to find out the manufacturer of the basic block then you'll find what you need form motor factors or main stealers. Mac of Cygnet
Google Elring Beru. Well thank you, Bizzard, but I'm not going to Azerbaijan for an item I don't know the part number for. I presume Elring Beru manufactures glow plugs, but I still can't find either a website for them or anyone who can cross-match the Vetus number, which is all I've got. And yes, it's a Mitsubishi base engine, but I think not an automotive one, and I can't find the Mitsubishi equivalent. Anyone help on that at least? There must be lots of smaller boats with this engine in. Cheers Mac

Nearly if not all the Jap base engines are marinized industrial units.

I have their phone numbers somewhere,i'll try ringing them tomorrow.

Good man tho i cant see why the op hasnt come up with a supplier as they are easy to google, my link was the first I came to although they maynot be the best source I,m sure that others could be found with a little leg work Edited March 9, 2012 by soldthehouse
Guest
Base engine a Mitsubishi I believe. Usually Mitsu S2L, S3L or S4L ,the 2,3 and 4 being the number of cylinders. These people will know the generic numbers I think: http://www.diamonddiesels.co.uk/small.htm Also: http://www.thornycroftparts.co.uk/ Edited March 9, 2012 by Guest

I have Googled Mitsu S2L, suggested as the base engine, with a complete blank on Google's part - a rarity, you must admit. But I have discovered 2 suppliers in this country who list the original parts at £17 cheaper each than the Vetus Shop, so I think I'll have to order these and hope they can supply at the price. Still over £30 each for glow plugs though. Mac

Iknow it means removing it but it will be the short route in the long run, thats what I would do then at least you have something positive to work with Hunters at Beamish not a million miles from you will get a cross reference Edited March 9, 2012 by soldthehouse
Biggles
I seriously doubt that assuming its a Mitsibush engine will make their own glow plugs. They will be out there somewhere just get one out and take it to a diesel specialist. I have a Vetus DT44A as the main engine and it has no glow plugs. A proper long stroke Detuz diesel. The Vetus genny has a 2 cylinder Mitsubushi 500 cc engine with glow plugs. This little engine can't be that difficult to track down its original Mitzi heritage. Guest
Cant speak for all Vetus engines, but on mine the base engine is labelled on the rocker box. It is a Mitsu S4L.

Well, I Googled Mitsu S4L, and of the very few results that came up, the most informative was by yourself, on JustCanals, describing your visit to the Thornycroft factory, where they marinise the Mitsu S4L. However, the part I require appears to be only for the M2 and M3 series. Do you happen to know if they also marinise the 2 and 3 cylinder Mitsu? Mitsu S2L gave no results at all, as I said earlier. Cheers Mac Best stop faffing about trying to find cross references etc. Do as has been suggested and take one out, then take it to any decent motor factors (not accessory shops/Halfords) and they will match it up. Not sure about the length of the bulb but I would lay odds they will be the same as Beta (Kubota) ones. Perhaps try a Kubota agricultural or plant dealer. Thenk the lord he may listen eventually!!!!!!!!!! even if he identifies "the usual" type fitted by research sods law says when he takes them out they will be different. If I want a match the first thing to do is slap it on a counter somewhere and take it from there. I regularly wonder why people on here bother trying to help as some people will do anything but take the easy route!!

I did take one out, but didn't realise I would have this problem, and the boat and the plug is 200 miles away! Edited to say that 'slapping it on a counter somewhere' is not the easy option for me - it would take the cost of the part to even get to a decent motor factors from where I live. In effect, any spares I need have to be ordered by phone or internet. Edited March 11, 2012 by Mac of Cygnet

dcruk
On the NGK glowplug finder the Mitsubishi L2 engine uses a Y-723U glow plug , but I also found Y-145T listed on another site as equivalent for the Mitsubishi MM432148 glow plug. The Y-145t can be had of Ebay for £7. Hth, Dave
