Bullfrog
Today I finally cracked after increasing frustration with IE (getting slower and gobbling up resources) and switched to Firefox for the first time. Already impressed with the speed of operation and the fact that it's freed up my machine again. Now worried that there is no such thing as a free lunch and wondering are there any future problems I should look out for. I know many of you are Mozilla users and look forward to some feed-back. thanks david

I know many of you are Mozilla users and look forward to some feed-back. thanks david It's been my browser of choice for some time now along with Thunderbird for my email. It very very occasionally crashes - more often on my desktop PC with Vista than on this laptop with Win 7. The main problem I had with it I traced to the 'add in' to open Adobe PDF docs. within the browser, it would often freeze when I tried to do this. I disabled the 'add in' so that Adobe Acrobat itself opens when I download a pdf doc. and all is fine now.

I changed to chrome after frustration with poor firefox performance. Wouldn't go back.
by'eck
Have a look at Opera browser as well. Built in email - huge range of extensions (including YouTube download) - speed dial with your favourite web pages displayed as thumbnails - Opera unite which allows you to use all your personal web settings on another machine - form autofill - file sharing - to name just a few. Guest Quo Vadis
I use both Chrome and Firefox, the latter for preference purely because I'm more used to it, and have been very satisfied. As with all things internet, the more Ram you've got the better it works. One useful add-on for both is Adblocker, which cuts most of the ads from Ebay etc. I've used Firefox for several years now, and one or two of the later updates do seem to have been backward steps, but I'll stick with it. Still have to use IE for some trade websites (esp foreign ones) as not all will display properly on Chrome or Firefox. Used to use Thunderbird for Email, but changed to Googlemail which is lightyears better.
alan_fincher
I'm completely happy with Firefox itself, and very rarely have any issues with the actual product, which seems rock stable, and certainly more so than IE. The one downside can be that upgrades to the latest version will disable an add-on for which there proves to be no currently supported version on the latest Firefox. Typically this is for specialist add-ons, (e.g. a viewer for photographed images on a genealogy website), but annoying if it does happen. I'm all using Firefox now on a Linux (Ubuntu) platform, as well as with Windows Vista. It actually seems faster under Linux, although the PC there has a lower spec. (Probably a lesson about which OS to use, rather than a lesson about which browser to use!....)
NB Alnwick
I have now changed to Firefox from Opera - I like it very much and it seems faster. It does all that Opera does once you have worked out how to make subtle mods and learn esoteric controls. The only add-ons or extensions that I would recommend being the 'British English Dictionary version 1.19.1' - a spell checker that works nicely with Gmail and forums like this . . . DHutch
Im also an opera convert, used mozilla and firebird back in the day but then made a switch and largely it just suck, no real reason, although it does now sync nicely with opera on my phone. Grace and Favour
And I use Firefox on our Mac - with excellent reliability / speed (in fact - it's not crashed for the 18 months I've been using this arrangement)
Biggles
Been using FF for best part of 10 years in its evolving forms. Never had a problem with it. I hear chrome is good to but TBH never had the need to try it.

Guest
Used to use Thunderbird for Email, but changed to Googlemail which is lightyears better. I too use Google mail (Gmail) but use Thunderbird to collect and send it. Much better functionality and you do away with the ad's that appear in the right hand side bar and along the top of your emails. If you use the IMAP facility it all stays in sync. across all PC's that you have Thunderbird on, including any folders you create or delete. Plus you can always fall back on the web based version of Gmail if you ever need to collect your email from a PC that does not have Thunderbird installed. That's why I installed Adblocker ... no adverts. I used Thunderbird for some years, and agree it works well, certainly infinitely better than Outlook Express, but Gmail is just so easy to use, anywhere, anytime and the link to my Google Android phone is really useful. Can't say that I ever use my Gmail email address though, as I didn't want to be "myname12345@gmail.com"
Guest
Hi I have tried Firefox and it was OK, but I find Google Chrome is even better. Alex My findings exactly with both Windoze (XP and Vista) and Linux operating sytems. Chrome kicks ass as the youngun's put it. Opera isn't bad either in my experience, but it is Chrome every time for me; the others are too obese. I too use Google mail (Gmail) but use Thunderbird to collect and send it. Plus you can always fall back on the web based version of Gmail if you ever need to collect your email from a PC that does not have Thunderbird installed. I mostly use Gmail now. Have found it to be fairly spam free and very reliable. I use both Chrome and Firefox, the latter for preference purely because I'm more used to it, and have been very satisfied. I agree about the ram thing, but the one thing that made my old laptop fly, and I mean fly, was ditching windoze. Windows is OK if the machine is up to it, but as all the updates go on, they seem to gradually grind to a halt. I am a Linux convert until something better comes along (I do still have XP in a small corner of the HD to run a CAD programme that I like.) Nightwatch
Alright a techy question. I have Firefox and after one of the updates all is okay apart from I can't view 'you tube' vids on full screen. It goes to full screen but the screen is black. There is sound. Any suggestions and how to 'put right'. My own thoughts are that I would need to revert back to the previous edition. Don't know how to and what version I'm on. Many thanks Martyn
