As is my understanding, Harry Corbet was so bad at handling the boats that someone had to crouch behind him to actually steer.
Sooty ?

Two different Harry Corbetts, Alan.

Harry Corbett was the man of Sooty fame but Harry H Corbett was the man of of TV acting fame eg Steptoe & Son.

And yes, that is one dodgy DVD, Jamboat! That DVD is about as legitimate as the suggestion that Gordon Brown is a financial genius!

I heard the great news today. love it LEMINGTON SPAAAAAAA SANDRA AHHHHHHHH

You've put URL tags round it and not IMG tags.

The livery on the boat on that looks familiar as a hire company, but I can't think of it for the life of me.

Look like alverchurch.

What !!

heresy..........

C

WHAT?!?!?!

'tis a classic British comedy.

Just one of the many big gaps in my knowledge...

I did go and see Painted Boats last year courtesy of London IWA - I think they'd had The Bargee the year before. I liked the kitten who had obviously cracked the secret of eternal youth.

Will continue to look for it. was it a good production?

http://ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/series/27621

some more detail, indication there were 3 x 45 min episodes

another film that i would be interested in getting a copy of is flower of glosster it was put out as a series in the late 60s or early 70s. so if you come across imformaton of that in your hunt of maidens trip that will be of great interest. mike

It did - it got onto celluloid, then VHS.

No actors in these ones, the real people doing their jobs.

You must have seen There go the Boats surely?

And Inland Waterways? And from 1960/61 Robert Reid Reports? or Broad Waterways?

Anything made by the British Transport Film (BTF) unit are gems. These above are available from Beulah films. There are many more.

The Bargee was scheduled for release on DVD in 2007 this was suspended, this year together with "Painted Boats" various difficulties have seen these put back several times. "The Bargee" currently is not on the release list on Optimums webpage. Price is scheduled to be £15.99 each, not sure where the Amazon price has come from. There is a plan to package both together with a documentary about where they were filmed (then and now) but details are not finalised as yet. The Ebay purchase shown earlier doesnt carry any BBFC certificate or rating which is illegal. In relation to some of the BTF BW films our own BW Archive has these.

Well the Amazon £9.98 price is reduced from £15.99.

I was in that (twice) The BBC Crew used our boat for filming at Stoke Bruerne because their boat had been delayed. I didn't see either of the episodes that I appeared in, but everybody at work did, much to my embarassment. I always wore a suit and tie to work, and no one had ever seen me in jeans and denim jacket.

  • 3 months later...

Well, my copy has arrived, and the colour quality and sharpness is better than I've ever seen when its been shown on TV.

First class job of digitally restoring it.

And still very funny, with a whole raft of great British comedy actors.

I bought my copy on DVD off ebay back in June, bit cheaper as well at £5.00 plus 50p p&p.

Just checked ebay but currently only available on VHS.

What you purchased was an illegal copy of a VHS version released by DD Home entertainment in 2001. The seller has probably been removed under copyright infringement rules.

When I was very young I saw a film about working boats on TV; this must have been well over 40 years ago, but I can remember an elderly character who painted canal ware and whose repeated slogan was "There's life in the old cut yet". One scene showed him and another character legging a boat through a tunnel. Would that have been 'Painted Boats'?

Almost certainly - Yes. Though it was a narrator that spoke the words, and after a diversion from the story line to view parts of the cut that had fallen into neglect. The line was a propaganda line, intended to perk up the general attitude (latter years of WWII), that the canal was indeed a useful artery, and also show that the 'Smith's' would have a use for a Motor - whereupon the story line is resumed.

Painted Boats is a good old film, I watched it loads of times where I used to work. It was on loop most days, other days we had The Bargee on loop 8 hours a day. Still not recovered properly!

LEAMINGTON SPA-HA-HA-HAR!! Sandra? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! That is not a bad idea, she's good for a giggle. etc etc etc.

Help me, I have Bargee Syndrome
