Boat Insurance claiming

There are often questions on the forum regarding reccommended companies for boat insurance. The one thing usually lacking is exoerience with particular companies when making a claim.

I have been insured with Craftinsure at a very reasonable cost, for several years, but have never needed to make a claim. I was speaking today with someone who has lived in our marina here as a liveaboard, for the last 3 years, he is also insured with Craftinsure. He would be recognisable to some of you as the man who tied his ropes too tight, causing his boat to almost sink when the water levels rose above outlets in the hull and the same person that also drilled a hole through the bottom of the boat whilst attempting to fit a bilge pump.

Apparently, he contacted Craftinsure in both instances, giving them full details of both circumstances. To his surprise, they confirmed that he was covered by the insurance in both cases, paying out the cost of repairs in full, less the £100 excess in both claims. The first and larger flood damage claim was paid in 6 days of the claim being submitted, with the second for lift out and hull weld within 2 days.

He was most impressed with their help, callbacks to check that all was ok and the unexpected speed of the process, inspite of his concerns about his own responsibilty in both incidents.

Very reassuring for others like myself, who may otherwise never know until any attempt to claim is made.

And staying in "praise where praise is due" mode, I'll record that Haven Knox-Johnston were good when I put my knee through one of the stained-glass window panels on Melaleuca whilst attempting to pole us off the mud somewhere on the GU. They happily paid for a stained-glass specialist to take the panel and rebuild it, asking only that we got two quotes.

Thanks Roger it is good to hear such positive comments about craftinsure especially since we have our boat insurance through them. I am particularly surprised that they are going to pay out for drilling a hole in his own boat but it shows the cover is better than I thought.

Hi

We insured our boat with Craftsure and we were very happy with the ease of getting insured online, and the price.

Of course you dont know how good the cover is till you are unfortunate to have to make a claim.

Posts like this make you feel better knowing that if when you need good cover, you indeed recieve it

thankyou for the post

I would just like to add that we had good service on a claim that we had to make on our narrow boat using Mardon Marine (Towergate Mardon now, I believe) when another boat ran in to us so hard, while we were tied up in a Thames lock, that it creased our stern hull panel.

If this is the same Knox-Johnston of sailing fame, then I am not surprised. He is a member of another Internet forum of which I am a member and we always enjoy his sailing tales.

I believe that the chap has lent them his name (no doubt in return for some beer tokens) but I don't think he actually has much to do with running the insurance. "Haven Knox-Johnston is a trading name of Amlin Underwriting Services Ltd which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority. "

I'm surprised Craftinsure didn't have a clause in their terms and conditions to exclude rank amateurs like that bloke!

Thanks, Roger, for passing this on. Like many others, I'm with Craftinsure and it's good to hear that 'your' insurance company is a good 'un!

Same here. Good to know.

  • 1 month later...

I searched for Craftinsure instances and found this thread.

I have had a claim running for ages now and can't seem to get a response/decision/communication from them.

Anyone have any negative experience?

My Dad insures through them (never claimed though), and found them very good. I called them for insurance for Victoria (1931 Royalty Class Motor), but they don't insure boats over a cirtain age. I cirtainly didn't have any problem contacting them however.

I hope not

So do I.

Not a boating story but something stupid.

14 years ago I once accidentally drilled through a domestic gas pipe at home whilst fitting a fire surround. Aside from the initial panic and rush to turn off the supply the whole repair process was eased by the understanding insurance company I was with at the time -

They never laughed once when I rang to report the incident and make a claim.  which was sorted very quickly.

Accidents (even really stupid ones) do happen....
