fishing near my boat

If moored opposite a match and annoyed by the tapping of rod ends and dangerous casting run your engine in gear. Our local expert in the paper was complaining bitterly how those with the best pegs opposite the boats had their chance ruined by ignorant boaters running their engines in gear. They gave up and left early.

A few years ago I was moored temporarily at a friendly Boat Club in the Chilterns. Despite there being signs opposite the moorings forbidding fishing, an angler planted himself in the middle and proceeded to cast under the boats, where he claimed the fish were hiding!

His attention was drawn to the no fishing signs and was asked to move away by a Club Official, he received a tyrade of foul mouthed abuse, which I remember, included the phrase "can't Fxxxxg read mate" . In despatation the owner of one of the boats being regularly hit ran his engine in gear which he thought would cause the angler to move. Well it did, but not in the way he thought.

The angler got up from his stool, and leaving all his gear on the topwpath, ran up to the canal bridge and onto the road, which he followed round until he reached the locked double gates to the Boat Club site. Undetterred, the angler broke through the hedge of the adjoining field, and then broke through the hedge at the back of the moorings, wherupon he sought out the "offending" boat owner and stated to lay punches into him.

Bad move!! Within seconds, about six other members were on top of him, where they held him until a car with a blue lamp on it arrived, he was escorted away (minus his Angling kit) and I understand later prosecuted for assault.

Fortunately most anglers are far less unfriendly, but you never know what is going to happen when you challenge some people.

Have often wondered why fishermen like to fish with long poles all the way across the river/canal. Why dont they get a small pole and fish off the other bank?

"My pole is longer than yours" syndrome. I guess it is a substitute for an inadequacy somewhere else.

I have read thro many topics on this forum to try gain an understanding of narrowboating which has been of great help and I have now have my own NB so this is an area I am very much a novice.

Here goes! I have been a course angler for over 50 years and been on the match circuit for around 30 years so I will try and explain a little about my sport.

Firstley lets agrree in any sport or pastime there will be people that are just unpleasant ignorant or just plain selfish.

I and my fellow anglers would not want to be associated with with some people who own a fishing rod and call them selves anglers.

I will confine my comments to canal fishing.

I belong to a club with over 8000 members one of the largest individual clubs in the UK there are larger amalgamations ie London and Birmigham AA.

Angling costs to not come compare with NB costs and the majority of anglers are aware that without the boating community there would be no canals to fish.

Canal matches years ago 60s/ 70s would often run into excess of 100 anglers all paying money into the pools (£5/10) which was paid out to the top 4 weights (not numbers of fish) together with smaller section winner prizes (every say 15 anglers).

On a canal match today 30 anglers would be a big match most likely to be club matches of 10/15 anglers.

All the big money has gone to commercial angling complexes ( hole in the ground filled with water and stocked with fish)

where access and facilities are good no dogs no bikes no pedestrians and yes no boats.

When I say Big money max £200 for first place down to £25 for a section win.

There are exceptions to this level of prize money but very rare.

Average cost to enter a match excluding purchase of tackle around £20/30 plus travelling.

Not really a money thing at club level assuming your lucky enough to win the odd match.

Match anglers will almost certainly be using a pole to fish with not a rod and line threfore they do not cast.

This is risky to generalise on but rod and line anglers a likely to be occasional anglers (pleasure anglers) and a small minority of those will have no respect for the sport or any one else come to that and I would suggest that these are the trouble makers boaters meet on occasions.

Phew thats enough I could go on but this is more than enough to prompt a rply or two.

Sorry just one more point pole fishing is very accurate and the fish move away from the angler hence fishing the far bank

It must be difficult sometimes to read some of the anti angler rants and not just give up and leave.

Anglers are part of the character of the waterways and the chance to take a close look at their quarry is for me at least, fascinating. I am sure I am not alone in having once or twice brought the boat to a complete halt or left it in a lock because it is clear that an angler is into a big one and needs all the water he can get. I have also enjoyed a number of conversations with anglers covering those reasons we have in common for being there. Some anglers are a right pain occupying waiting moorings, so are some boaters! Some anglers fish on visitor moorings and beep bite alarms at you all night, some boaters have parties that keepyou awake all night. There's no accounting for ignorance. I have had tackle foul my boat below the waterline and the angler expect me to stop and dock the boat there and then for the sake of a 50p hook! We all do our own thing with as much good grace as is granted to us, but some are woefully under supplied in that department.

Quite by chance my 1970's negative collection yielded this oddity.....

It seems life was a bit simpler then, versus the several hundredweight of kit that seems to bit a necessary adjunct to fishing.

Anyway I quite like the minimalist appraoch here, (note the improvised rest for the rod!).

I'm guessing this is the entrance to the Hertford Union Canal, (Ducketts) from the Regents, but I'm not sure.

Does anybody know, and have those stop gates survived, please ?

ihave fished canals for 30 yrs and been involved in narrowboats for as long ,granted ive never owned one [yet]. whenever i fish the canals i do so at night and have done for a decade mostly because of the completely inconsiderate behavior of about a third of boaters some of whom will open

up the throttle at the sight of an angler and do everything they can to "spoil their day".so night fishing it is.unless my children want to come,in which case i have to fish during the day, well i hope the morons who decide that it is more fun to trash our too infrequent days out than to have some consideration for oh forty seconds of their lives get a nice warm feeling of superiority. boaters may pay a lot more money to boat than anglers do to fish but at the end of the day i see this as yet more evidence of the well heeled thinking that money gives them the right to more of everything and blow everyone else.[always the shiny ones that give us agro].

further, fish do congrgate next to boats due to them being cold blooded they like the warmth from engine cooling tanks, wood burners etc.so starting your prop will just make the canal into fish soup,so unlucky you're stuck with the fishermen. and isnt running your prop whilst moored against bw bye laws .rant over.

I have lived my life by the following premise "never let a muppet wreck your day ".:lol::lol:

and remember it could be a boater sat there with a rod.

Well I went for a potter up the Worcs & B'ham at Easter. I slowed right down to tickover as I passed fishermen, as I always do. (Despite my huge wealth and natural feelings of "warm superiority", I do recognise that the working classes need some opportunities to engage in simple pastimes such as fishing.)

Not one of them bothered to thank me, make eye contact or even acknowledge my presence. Even the slightest nod of appreciation might encourage more of us "filthy rich" boaters to slow down.

No that works a bit differently,

The bigger the bet you place, the more chance you have of winning.

Simon.

Well only if you have enough grunt to justify the bet

Oh and we do encourage spread betting as well

nice1 paul quality m8.:lol::lol: you would have received thanks and acknowledgement from me for your considerate behavior if only 'they'were all like u. . i did try to avoid sweeping generalisations as i have a freind on a liveaboard who is very far from wealthy.

not all anglers are dip sticks who bounce their end gear off you boat, infact there are probably very few of them,i too do a bit of angling,i dont use a pole so i rely on the accuracy of my cast,i measure the lenght of the cast out and then "clip" up ,this action should prevent any accidents,in extreme cases i use a bait boat.

Hanging a net off of the side of your boat would be a great deterrant, probably for the same reasons that anglers dont like casting too close to trees, loose enough of your end gear up a tree and it starts to get expensive, anglers do not like casting close to anything that will snag their gear.

i was moored on the nene and overnight some angling club had organised a match just upstream from me,i walked up and enquired as to my best route as not to disturb the match, the guys pulled their poles in as i motored up and a few waves and everyone was happy.

why dont anglers and boaters try to get along with each other,we are all on the river, lets enjoy it.

I dont think the fisherman and boaters will ever get on properly, I do both and understand wheere both come from, before i gat a yelling at, i am not one of those ignorant idiots who fish to close to boats or winde up fisherman. We need to all get on but this is human nature to be ignorant.

A little story which i still laugh about to this day.

Some time ago i got my first ever cabin cruiser, chuffed to bits but knew nothing about boating, just jumped in and set off.

Cant be hard this baoting lark

Set off out the marina to head for my new mooring, MMMmm dont turn very good i thought when i bounced of the opposite bank, oh well time to learn.........bump, another bank

A few hundred yards further on i got the kback, thats after upsetting a fisherman or two

All waas going well untill i got to leigh near wigan, there was a fishing match on , what do i do sit and wait for a few hours, Nah, i have been there fishing and other baots have just ploughed through, so i carried on, would you belineve a few started baiting up there swim AND my boat, Hey love i got free bait for my next session

Maggots all over the rear deck

Not just that but the blinkin out board packed in RIGHT in the middle of the match, didnt know what the hell to do except to apologise many times while pulling the cord like a man possesed

Thank god it fired up, FULL revs wre on and it set off into a fisherman on his peg before i could get to the helm to steer away and cut the revs  .

That day i will never forget and puts me in the understabding why boaters and fisherman dont realy get on much.

One point though for all is that unless some half wit conks out in your swim  then boats are not that bad to me, they atract fish, moving or moored. Just be more repectful all of us, i know its hard.
