Back in South Yorkshire and they are evacuating parts of Catcliffe in Rotherham.

River levels there are now higher than the previous record in 2007, which probably means our friends house has been flooded this time. He missed it with inches to spare last time. (although the following week suffered with a catastrophic fresh water leak from the attic ensuite which flooded the house anyway 🙄)

My friend Brenda was evacuated earlier today, her house was flooded in 2007 and again last night.  In 2007 you could only see the ridge tiles and aerial this time it's the downstairs but of course if the river levels are going up it will be a repeat! They should not build on flood plains, I used to play in the ponds there as a kid so clearly they arnt learning!

To be fair a lot of the property flooding in Sheffield, Chesterfield and Worksop has been to older housing. A lot of it Victorian housing.

In Catcliffe the new builds are all high and dry. It is the older housing and 1970/80s local authority housing that has flooded.

I once navigated the Thames on reds and yellows all the way from Laleham to Reading taking advice from lockkeepers as I went. The reds weren't bad reds. I'm with Craftinsure so whether I was insured or not I've no idea. I'd been working for a Thames passenger boat company for a couple of years prior to that so moving in slightly adverse conditions seemed normal to me at the time. Some parts were a bit hairy such as going through those bridges near Sonning and approaching a couple of locks with weird running next to them, but it was fun.

My thinking is if you move on yellows and reds just make sure nothing happens that's going to require insurance! 😋

I don't understand some boaters. Why would you move in such adverse conditions? In my opinion they don't seem to have understood the most basic "rule" of boating which is to move according to the prevailing conditions. I guess ignoring the conditions is part of the canal boating mindset because most of the time they're not having to think about currents or flooding, but it's a very dangerous mode of thinking if there are rivers which flow into the canal. I often see them getting into trouble because some of them don't have a clue and bring that ignorance with them when they do venture onto rivers.

Mmm.....

The flood water here at Farndon is still rising but looks like it may be levelling off. The marina site is almost entirely under water . The flood water has almost reached the marina entrance gate so no vehicle could safely enter .

Most winters there  is some flooding but Its not been this high for a while . However  the  previous record set  in 2000 was more than a foot higher.

It is interesting to consider whether an elderly person dying at home during flooding died because of the flooding or just died randomly.

People are dying all the time in various different circumstances. It is especially common with old people.

'Derbyshire Constabulary initially said the death was "believed to be related to the flooding" in the area, but later stated only that investigations were "continuing" '

It could be a symptom of mass media hysterical dumbing down.

We still are getting a lot of standing water in significant ammounts on the roads as the adjacent fields continue to shed water. Despite it not raining for a while.

Luckily though no major flooding incidents like those occuring elswhere.

Apparently the Tees is threatening Yarm though.

Talking to an old boy in Great Haywood on Essex bridge and he said in 50 years of being in Great Haywood he had never seen the water so high in the Trent.  This was the Trent coming under the aqueduct by Anglo Welsh.

The Trent will only get worse as the waters from the Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire and Birmingham catchment areas start to flow downstream. I always reckon its at least 3 to 4 days after the main rain that the water levels stop rising downstream of Nottingham.

The River Trent drains a catchment area of over 10,000 square kilometres

Any educated guesses as to when the stretch at Alrewas (where the Trent joins the canal) might be open? 👀

I remember being stuck at Sawley for over 2 weeks and the rain hadn't been as bad as it is this time.

Even when they unlocked the locks the trip down to Canfleet was frightening.

Managed to get onto a pontoon (at the sailing club), but another boat came barrelling down totally out of control, hit us snapped the lines and off we spun with no steering towards the weir, ended up sideways in the flow and just managed to get the bow around and creep slowly forward against the flow.

I wouldn't rush to travel before it is safe to do so, and that may not be when C&RT say it is.

Remember - it is the skipper, not the navigation authority that determines when you are safe to move.

Thanks - not exactly what I wanted to hear, but certainly the sensible option. No point taking unnecessary risks at this point.

I’ll wait it out in Alrewas until things have returned to normal from now — obviously it helps that Alrewas is absolutely gorgeous!
