Long term boat hire or boat share options

Featured Posts

I’m seeking to return to UK to explore the canals early next year particularly around the Llangollen Canal, and would like to take between 4 to 8 weeks to do this preferring a larger boat for comfort 60+ft.

Are there any reasonably priced long term hire companies or who cater to such packages or even share syndicates who cater to fewer shareholders / longer term time slots that anyone can recommend.

Appreciate any leads anyone may have.

Cheers

Michael

Use search function, Rose hire.

I have comfort on my 57ft, central heating, solid fuel stove, heating essential for six to eight months. The main advantage of short boats the ability to turn around in more parts of the waterways.

It would be worth contacting a few hire companies to see what sort of deal they might offer on a long hire, they probably don't advertise long hires but may give a good discount.  Try Chas Harden who are in that area.

4 to 8 weeks is not really that long, so many more companies may be able to accommodate you, particularly early or late in the season.  But the two companies that come to mind, where you meet hirers doing long term hire, are Rose Narrowboats at Stretton, Rugby, and Canal Cruising at Stone.  When we were last at Llangollen, there was actually a Rose hire boat in the basin.

I think you may have a great deal more difficulty in finding many  share boat syndicates that are willing to do this. In many cases a share boat is just like any other privately owned boat  that just happens to have more than one owner, and to do what you suggest would certainly entail a lot of cost in meeting the more stringent costs of a hire boat company - insurance and safety aspects for example. A syndicate is usually used year round by owners - most shared boats are used more than hire boats for example during a year - and even if they were willing to contemplate such an arrangement I would suggest that there may not be any way your suggestion could be slotted into the syndicates owners bookings.

Thanks for all the replies, I will look into the hire boat companies as suggested.

I have hired before for a 2 week period at a cost of around GBP3,000 so can imagine that hiring for say 6 weeks would cost around GBP7,500.

With Regards to typical boat share syndicates I did research this and found as Howard pointed out that they are not suitable for me.

However, my calculation of maintaining a privately owned boat is around GBP6,000 per year so my preference would be to split ownership of a boat between 2 or 3 persons and have annual use of say 2/3 months per year and split the maintenance and purchase cost. I have seen no syndicates set up like this, might any exist?

There are some share boats like this, syndicates with originally 6 or more owners where when one of the owners wants to sell out, one of the remaining owners have bought out the share until there are perhaps 3 owners. I also know of one boat bought new by an owner who found they did not use it as much as expected and sold a half share, one owner has it for spring to mid summer and the other for mid summer through autumn. Finding such shares for sale may be more difficult.

You might like to have a look at the following web sites which specialise in share boat and especially both have a wealth of information about the ins and outs of how it all works. You may find some tips which may help you if thinking about setting up a small syndicate. .

Philip, who runs https://www.boatshare.co.uk/ is super helpful. Gave me some great info about our ex-Ownerships boat when we had shares and i was looking into its history, and when we sold our shares using his site really went the extra mile to help with the advert etc. I’d recommend him to anyone.
