Ah yes but wasn't he born in the UK and as a Limey first and foremost he should have known better! 😄

Personally, I think we should all start to call them Back Springs, a throwback to earlier, simpler times but which was still being used within living memory (mine anyway).

but what if the bolted parts of the armco are in such a position to only allow an angle of 44.5 degrees?  Do you risk putting your goat chain in a position where it might get trapped?

Lots seem to. I have collected one or two nappy pins like that, come out with the help of a mooring hammer

I always feel for the bolts holding the rail to the armco and put chains or piling hooks there so that they don't get trapped. It does mean that the 45 degree angle gets compromised sometimes but the angle isn't that critical.

Me too. One of my home moorings is on Armco and worse than the goat chains getting trapped, mine tend to get pulled right through to the next section (or two) if I don't find the bolts and drop the chains behind them.
