Diesel Heaters

I am looking to get a 2kw diesel heater for my 30ft cruiser style narrowboat. Firstly could anyone advise if 2 rather than 5 is sufficient for a relatively small boat. Also is there a preferred make to go for or more to the point not to get. Mixed reviews on some.
Thanks.

Whatever model you go for just ensure it is not an 'automotive' model as the electronics are different to the marine version - ALSO - the automotive exhaust is dangerous for use in a boat as it lets Carbon Monoxide build up in your bilges - you will need to buy a seperate marine exhaust system.

Are you looking at a 'blown hot-air' or 'hot water & radiators' system ?

Assuming you've been looking at the £100 Chinese air heaters, I'd suggest getting 5kW unit as they are user-adjustable down to 2kW anyway. Although the appliance itself is good, when it arrives throw away the disastrous exhaust system they supply. It will leak exhaust gas into your boat, tend to disconnect itself from the heater and generally be a risk to your safety. There is another thread running recently here on Chinese diesel heaters with a link to a good quality exhaust that also costs about £100.

If you have deeper pockets Webasto, Eberspacher or Mikuni I think are the decent quality brands to go for. Budget well into four figures for any of these but they'll come with safe exhausts!

I keep hearing this and repeat it to others too, however my automotive webasto thermotop C works fine, down to about 12v on my battery monitor. I didn't use the automotive exhaust silencer though and just bought a cheap silencer on eBay that fitted inside the flexible pipe. It all works really well.

Have a look at the Lavaner Pro diesel heaters. Good quality and a great price. I'd be very tempted to get the 5KW.  Bare in mind you'll need a few extras when installing in a boat... Fuel filter with stop cock, marine fuel hose, exhaust through hull, marine silencer (if you want a silencer) exhaust wrap, heater mount (install dependant) extra internal ducting depending where you want the hot air etc etc...

And here's the other thread. I suggest it is a goldmine of info on the Chinese diesel heaters, well worth reading end to end.

And the marine exhausts we keep mentioning are not mentioned in the thread I linked, so have a look here:

They have quite a few on the site, this is just an example. have a search of the site for "marine exhaust".

Remember that in a 'van' the exhaust gas just exits thru the floor, or, thru the engine bay and the gases are dispersed in the air. In a boat the exhaust must be 'plumbed' in using no-hole piping and vented thru a hull fitting in the side of the boat.

Swerving off at a tangent, although the Mellor site has a shopping cart its not immediately obvious to me how to actually buy anything. Maybe its me but there seems to be no "Buy Now" button on this or on any other of the listings.

Or IS there?

I purchased something last week from them... I don't remember it being difficult 😕

Edit:  Although i would have used a laptop not a phone, perhaps the site renders differently...

I'm using a laptop too. No "buy' button that I can see.

Here's the page link again. Can anyone else here see a "buy" button anywhere on the page?

Thanks

Perhaps they have closed on line purchasing for Christmas Hols, banner at the top says open on the 4th.

Good call but I don't think that's it. I've been back there lots of times over the last week or so trying to buy an exhaust and have yet to see a Buy button on anything on the site.

Yes. I was looking at their recommendations for the new ones out there. They seem to get a bit of discount too.
