What's the derivation of "ain't"? The ' is obviously for the missing o, but why ai?

Personally, when I write it, I just write aint, which I accept is incorrect,  but, seeing as how we're being all grammatical and I can't be bothered to look it up, anyone know?

In the U.S.A. ain't, though itself a negative, is often followed by another negative, for emphasis I suppose. Ain't no way I'd do that, not nohow, though I ain't saying that I ain't never done it.

We saw The Blockheads at a festival about ten years ago. They were led by Chas Jankel, who I think was an original member, and were very good, mainly playing songs from the Ian Dury era.
