David Mack Posted August 5, 2022 Report Posted August 5, 2022 According to the latest email from CRT, Locks 1-5 on the Coventry Canal are to be closed from 12 August. Since they are the top 5 locks of the Atherstone flight, why is the rest of the flight remaining open, and how will they be supplied with water?
PaulJ Posted August 6, 2022 Report Posted August 6, 2022 Notice I got is a restriction and not stoppage... From Date: 12/08/2022 15:30 To Date: On-going Type: Navigation Restriction Reason: Water resources Is the towpath closed? No Location Closest waterway: Coventry Canal Starts at: Lock 1, Atherstone Top Lock Ends at: Lock 5 Upstream winding hole: Atherstone Top Lock Downstream winding hole: Bridge 48 Description To conserve our water resources in this continuing hot and dry weather, restrictions on lock opening times will need to be in place. The opening times will be 6:30 - 15:30. The last boat through will be 15:30 and the lock will be closed at 17:00 Boaters wanting to pass through the five locks are advised to leave plenty of time to navigate through the flight before 17:00. After a relatively dry late spring and summer, levels in reservoirs are lower than normal for the time of year. In order to maximise the available water the Trust is taking the sensible precaution of locking targeted locks up overnight. This measure is intended to reduce the potential for water losses overnight. We will continue to monitor our reservoir storage and canal opening hours with a view to keeping disruption to a minimum whilst balancing a need to save water. Thank you for your patience.
David Mack Posted August 6, 2022 Author Report Posted August 6, 2022 Water resources update for boaters ... The following canals are temporarily closing to navigation, or have restricted operating times until water levels recover: ... Coventry Canal – closed from Locks 1 – 5 from 12 August
Stroudwater1 Posted August 6, 2022 Report Posted August 6, 2022 It appears to be an email inaccuracy that’s somewhat surprising for crt (🤣🤣) in the email they sent out to everyone they have one for. Someone senior you would think would have sense checked such an important message? The stoppage notice on crt website posted above show Atherstone are open but for relatively restricted times, similarly Hillmorton are restricted now. I’m sure that’s the correct plan.

As they say, asking for a friend, because I am miles away, Last time I was in Aylesbury the bottom end was pretty low. To the point where CRT are actually going to do bank protection and leak stopping on the pound between locks 14 and 15, as well as some work on the gates, starting on 5 Sep. There is a CRT notice for this, but I dont think navigation is stopped. Typically there is water everywhere from the staircase down to Wilstone but after Jem Bates place (where the wooden boats soak up lots of water) there a numerous leaks which have been reported time and again. The water then struggles to reach the end of the long pound at Broughton lock. Nobody reported problems over Tring, down through the fields to Leighton or up the Wendover Arm. N
