Just out of interest, where could you go on an 8ft wide narrowboat? I believe the Cheshire Ring in its entirety is possible as the 9ft pioneer boats can get through bridges/tunnels around Preston Brook area?

Pretty much the same places you could go on a 12 ft wide boat. The only difference that immediately comes to mind is that the 8ft wide boat could pass along the Trent and Mersey from Preston Brook as far as Croxton Aqueduct, whereas the 12 ft boat could not.

Just as a matter of record, (in law) a narrowboat is up to 7' 6" wide, anything above that is a wideboat.

Definition of Terms :

“narrow canal boat” means a vessel having a beam of less than seven feet six inches

These modern-day boats (6' 10")  built to suit the shrinking infrastructure are called ANB's (Anorexic Narrow Boat)

Do you think it would squeeze over the aqueduct and get up through Big Lock. I can't remember how much room there was to spare when we use to go that way.

That definition is only in relation to to those Bye-laws; it is not a universal definition or law
