Is there much to do or see in Chirk apart from the castle?

Not much, it's a pretty place but beyond that, oh unless you love MDF of course there's a big plant making the stuff

The Indian restaurant used to be OK

We're renting a Black Prince boat from Chirk next April and, having cruised the Llangollen many times in the past, will be heading "down" towards Hurleston Junction then to Barbridge for a meal at the "Old 100" pub for my 70th birthday. We'll probably go "up" to Llangollen first. Our daughter and grandkids will be visiting during the holiday, which will be lovely.

Stuart - remember the Llan is one of the very few (if not only) flowing canals, heading to the town of Llangollen you will be pushing against the flow and the boat will behave differently than when travelling with the current.

Chirk castle is the "main event" and well worth a visit. Chirk itself is OK, and there is also the option to walk up to overlook the tunnel entrance / exit which is good for some photos of the Aqueduct...

Would also recommend the castle Dinas Bran at Llangollen, a steep but short climb offering some great views, (assuming it is not foggy :) ...).

Also a week should give you some time to pop back the other way, (ie past Ellesmere) which offers some really nice sections of canal. 5 hours from Ellesmere in the opposite direction is Whixall Moss, which is worth stopping at and having a walk around...

There is the Llangollen Railway which the kids should enjoy, especially if the steam trains are running.

Also, the horse drawn boats do trips towards Horseshoe Falls.

You are allowed 48 hours mooring in Llangollen basin or on the towpath at a cost of £6 per night (payable at the horse drawn boats shop).

Many thanks all I appreciate your quick response cheers Stuart

Ps we are only planning on a short trip from Ellesmere to Llangollen and back over 7 days and any other tips and recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanking you all in anticipation.

If you get back to base with time to spare and decide to head down stream for a bit remember with the flow it will take you longer to get back.
