My understanding is the legal framework is still in place to enforce closure of schools and businesses as needed, but not to fine people for none essential travel. matty40s
According to that map, you cant even get to Kilsby Bridge without entering the plague zone.....although this is quite isolated and I expect that turning will still be allowed. North of Leicester, the Hopeless Anchor is the last stop, however, the winding hole following near the old gravel pits is now very overgrown so you may have to go past the gun emplacements and turn below Thurmaston lock. robtheplod
Notice Alert Location: Between Bridge 18, Wanlip Road Bridge and Bridge 52, Turnover Bridge Intersection of: Bridge 18 - Wanlip Road Bridge to Bridge 18 - Wanlip Road Bridge on River Soar and Bridge 82, Turnover Bridge to Bridge 82, Turnover Bridge on Leicester Line (Grand Union Canal) Tuesday 30 June 2020 until further notice Type: Advice Reason: Information Original message: Following the announcement from the Secretary of State for Health & Social Care regarding the reintroduction of lockdown measures in Leicester, the Trust is issuing new guidance on use of the waterways in the city and surrounding areas during this period. In line with updated Government advice the Trust is asking leisure boaters to stop all non-essential travel into and through the city with immediate effect. In order to help those who live-aboard the Trust is suspending the requirement to move every 14 days on moorings between Wanlip, (Bridge 18, Wanlip Road Bridge) and Newton Harcourt (Bridge 52, Turnover Bridge). The suspension will be kept under review in line with revised government guidance. Continuous cruisers outside of this area should continue to cruise, using other parts of the network outside of the lockdown area to do so. Leisure boaters with a mooring within the affected area who do not liveaboard will be unable to visit their boats during this period. Hire boat bases, which are due to begin operating again from 4 July, are asked to direct their customers away from the affected area. Angling and paddle sports have now been suspended on the River Soar/Grand Union Canal between the locations identified above. Whilst towpaths in the city will remain open, use of them should be limited. The Trust is asking people to please stay local, avoid any stretches with moored boats and strictly observe social distancing at all times. In particular, cyclists should go slowly and take care around other users. To not travel into the zone, the navigation is effectively closed above Cossington lock where you can turn in the river. South of the city, They should have said bridge 81, where there is a (badly silted) winding hole....rather than 3 locks down. As previously stated, allowing navigation down to Kilsby Bridge to wind would be quite sensible as it is all in the countryside.

The Garrison was much more rubbish-strewn even than normal when we went that way during week five (or so) of lockdown. A keb was essential equipment. It does nevertheless have an interesting feel to it: Proper boating. The Birmingham and Fazeley has long been my least favourite way into (and out of) Birmingham: one surfs down the hill towards Fazeley on a tidal wave of crap. MP. We couldn’t get out the lock and ran water for another 45 minutes and we were then able to churn through, no wonder Saddington is always low. Once through the mile a couple of locks up there is a very silted up pound we had to rock the boat through took nearly an hour to plough through the few hundred metres of black silt. Ok we are deep drafted but we now stick to the Coventry. We're regulars along that way in a deep draft boat, and I wouldn't say that's our normal experience. CRT do run water down from Kibworth to keep the levels up, and we once had delay on the river pound above St Mary's Mill lock followed by some mud plugging because we set off as soon as we could get over the lock cill, rather than waiting for the level to get all the way up. That was the result of vandalism AFAIR. Newton Harcourt is my favourite mooring anywhere and I certainly would regard the North Oxford and Coventry as a replacement for the Leicester Line and Soar. Yebut, doing that would require whoever wrote the notice to have on-the-ground knowledge of the canals in question. Those people presumably have better things to do than write (badly) emergency stoppage notices. I can see exactly why bridge 82 is mentioned; on the OS-derived map in my Nicholson the line marking one of the mysterious "Co const and CP Bdy"s passes over it. MP. Guest
It is of course nothing more than an arse covering excercise by the Trust who have to be seen to be in step with UK government. From the BBC. Mr Hancock said advice on people not travelling in or out of Leicester was a "recommendation for now", but laws could be put in place to enforce the lockdown. robtheplod
I can't see any reason boaters couldn't go straight through the area without stopping - bit like the East Berlin train corridor of years gone by! As long as you don't moor up where is the harm? I doubt anyone would be policing this anyway as the roads in/out of Leicester wont have checks....
