  1. Have you consulted the British Newspaper Archive? You'll find plenty of articles from local papers referring to the 1923 strike. There are some fascinating incidental details such as: at the end of the strike boats were delayed because the horses needed attention; also Northamptonshire education department drafted in extra teachers not only for the children but in order to teach the boat men and women the 3 Rs.
  2. Have a look at this thread. I've used slab insulation (the semi-rigid insulation - not Rockwool) and a plastic sheet stapled to the battens as a vapour barrier. https://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?/topic/80379-sticking-battens-to-hull/&do=findComment&comment=1685245
  3. Why not join the Refleks Diesel Stove FB group. There's a wealth of information on there. Looking after and servicing a Refleks is very simple.
  4. I was aware that fender-kickers might be a problem when we put our ex-working boat up for sale. I put a brief advert on ApolloDuck and passed the news by word of mouth. When the phone enquiries started I asked the person if they'd seen the very detailed website I'd set up describing the boat, its history and all the work that had been done over the years. I suggested that they study the website and come back to me with any questions. That approach whittled the field down to three serious enquirers (plus someone who wanted the mooring, not the boat!).
  5. I used to have have two, but I was spending more time maintaining them than I was boating. So, just down to one now
  6. Another way of making inspection panels is like this. The floor board next to the wall along the whole length of the floor can be removed in small sections.
  7. Apparently in 2011 the water table fell below the level of the canal and water drained out from the canal into the surrounding land. CRT was not able to fill the canal up from the underground wells because they had exceeded their annual water extraction licence. I remember being asked by CRT if I would run our ex working boat along the summit to test the depth.
  8. I have been trying, in vain, to cancel a contract with Three. I wanted to take advantage of a better deal. I was advised to cancel my original MiFi contract and take out a new one. All very simple, or so I thought. However, the Three Store I went to in order to do this were unable to cancel my contract because, supposedly, my SIM card is so old (about eight years) that their computer system didn't recognise it! After spending over an hour the store gave up and I was told that In 5-8 days I would receive an email which I would take back to the shop an get a new SIM card. When this had been installed I could then use it to cancel the contract. What a palaver.
  9. This was the original advert by Braunston marina in, I think, late 2019. The asking price was £49,950.
  10. I don't want to be a Job's comforter, but I'd say you've got quite a problem. The back end of my butty had rotted through from the inside just like yours. My son poked a hole in the hull while de-rusting it while it was in the water :(. This resulted in a large part of the stern being re-plated (not overplated). the original hole and the subsequent re-plating
  11. I used horizontal stringers for greater stability. Also I made sure the sides were 90 degrees to the floor. It may have meant losing a bit of space, but it made the fitting of furniture flush to the walls, e.g. kitchen cabinets, much simpler.

  13. Having party boats with up to 200 revellers go past late at night is bad enough but this Behemoth is on far greater scale. There is a petition here https://www.change.org/p/the-london-mayor-the-ocean-diva-party-boat-will-ruin-the-most-historic-part-of-the-thames?recruiter=295413633&recruited_by_id=d59fa610-f8e0-11e4-95e5-09b49dd68e52
  14. I do sympathise. The only time I've really and truly got stuck was on the Leicester line. I moved over to give an oncoming boat more room and got held firm on a great lump of concrete. None of the usual methods worked, including using rocking, shifting ballast, using a cabin shaft as a lever (it broke) and a Tirfor (because of the angle it simply pulled the boat over to an alarming degreee). In the end it took the combined power of three passing boats to haul it off). Not much help, I admit to the OP. Best of luck.
  15. When looking for something else I came across this article from the Leicester Mercury for 12th June 1974. The Savenake was built by Fernie Steel of Market Harborough and fitted out by Foxton Boat Services. I wonder when the protective cowl was removed.
  16. There was nothing to beat sausages and bacon fried up over the blow lamp while the Seffle was heating up
  17. No one has yet mentioned a Refleks. One of these will easily meet the OP's requirements. Excellent IMO.
  18. I always used to think that this boat was powered by a paddle wheel until I saw it whizz past with the wheel inactive.
  19. The price has dropped from £250K when new to £125K now. A bargain for someone. 😄

  21. True. For a discussion about how this floating bridge might have been constructed see here: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-hellenic-studies/article/abs/construction-of-xerxes-bridge-over-the-hellespont/A2EBCE0450608778B2C84FC3D107BBC9
  22. What about the floating bridge of boats across the Hellespont, constructed by Xerxes in 480 BC?
  23. https://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?/topic/97350-water-tank-level-gauge-best-thing-ever/&do=findComment&comment=2173699 I think the cost may have gone up since 2018, but it's still a very simple and effective method of measuring water consumption.
