  1. We've normally showed up on spec, but book for the return. Got caught out last year, turned up late morning but told no free spots. Ok I said, how about in the morning. " only guaranteed if you book", I.e. 'next available slot' doesn't carry over to the next day .
  2. Looking at the blistering paint and marks on the walls, and the state of the exterior it must leak like the proverbial sieve. And that is in the good half. Very dodgy-looking wiring dangling everywhere. OK so I have no real experience of woodentops, but to me it looks as though the whole superstructure needs replacing. 3. Not actually Covid-related, but no doubt some updates could be included to encompass it... Had enough government rhetoric? Tired of following the sheeple? Fed up with believing what THEY want you to believe? Maybe it's time to branch out and discover THE TRUTH.
  4. Didn’t know ASAP were part of Arleigh, but that seems a bit academic now. Not surprisingly, considering cost of property, loans and rates, the world seems to be moving to on- line sales, especially as delivery is much better sorted. No substitute for wandering around a chandlery looking for that essential item you didn’t know you needed.
  5. Many people don't live on their boat. But do "spend a lot of time on it". It's fairly easy to tell if a marina has "liveaboards", just don't use the term. And as Alan says, sort out your "address" details in advance.
  6. The fluted indoor keys have six spines. The Enfield one appears to have four, and also variations in the length
  7. My first boat had a DM2. Although a semi-trad, the first thing inside was the engine room. Then through a door to the cabin and the rest of the boat. Could be the same with a trad stern.
  8. The grease nipple on those bearing housings should line up with a groove in the bearing. When te rudder post is at an angle and the grease nipple is in line with the tilt, as is yours, the grease misses the groove and just comes out on the outside of the bearing. Which is why the bearings often don't last very long as the ball race rusts.

    saleaway

And how many times have we heard of people re-designing the wheel and then find what they have is unsaleable... Whitfield mentioned elsewhere is a good example of how to lose a large amount of money because the owner thought he knew better than all the experienced boaters.

    Galley sink

Try googling "Asterite". We've got a dark green one in the house. Asterite is very resistant to scratching or marking and comes in a range of colours. E.g.: https://www.wayfair.co.uk/diy-plumbing/pdp/sol-72-outdoor-jianglin-15-bowl-inset-kitchen-sink-u001826672.html?piid=1218482899

  15. The description starts off by saying it is a very well-known boat on the system. True, but for all the wrong reasons! I'd be surprised if those photos are current. And as for that cratch & cover ... Some newbie with more money than sense might buy it, but I can't see it getting anywhere near six figures. If it does sell, bet it stays in a marina and used as a show-off asset.

  17. Sorry, not Webster's. Should have said Wesley Marine.
  18. Are they Webster's Windows? The detail is a bit small, but they look similar. Have a look at the Webster Windows website. If they are, they will supply the catches. Helpful people if you speak to them.

  20. Classic cases of what can happen when you give someone a uniform and the “ little hitler” syndrome kicks in. But it also illustrates what happens when you have poor or incompetent management. These characters will have been complained about before, but nothing has been done. At best they need ‘retraining’, at worst they should be fired and told never to set foot on CRT property again.

  23. CW5. We have a 2-bed house in Willaston we rent out. We don't try and make a fortune out of the rent (although ROI is rather good these days, even on a below market level rent) and are fortunate we have a good tenant that pays on time, keeps the place reasonable and doesn't cause any trouble. We don't use an agent as the house is not far from where we live and, as you say, the agents take a sizeable chunk and generally do little for it, beyond calling their mates in if any little job needs doing. When I was working the boat was the only thing that kept me sane through a fairly stressful period. being able to go to the boat at a weekend and go and moor in the middle of nowhere was a lifesaver for me. if you want my advice (and of course you don't have to take it) then go for it, buy the boat, enjoy it. As for renting/lodger, for a single young person I can certainly see the benefit of doing it as a lodger, just make sure to stop the night there periodically. Don't waste any more time! You never now what is around the corner and it might not be what you have planned, so enjoy life while you can.
  24. I rarely venture on to the NBW site, but an article by Ms Horton of RCR on "post lockdown maintenance" caught my eye. She starts off with advice about batteries and goes on to say: "Systems’ charging times vary, however a 70amp alternator charging four x 110amp batteries from flat will take around three to five hours." Now I know that it used to be believed by many that a 70A alternator will put out 70 amps all the time, thus those 440AHr of batteries will be fully charged from 'flat' (50%?) in a few hours, but it has been repeated on here so many times over many years that that is not how it works. I'm rather disappointed that RCR should still be giving out the sort of advice that will lead to premature failure of batteries, not prevent it! RCR used to appear on here occasionally, or at least read it. It seems now that they think they know better than the many experienced genuine experts that post here regularly. It does make you wonder how good the rest of their advice is (except perhaps, to sell membership).
