  1. And whilst I’m not saying I could do any better, most are pretty awful. I would be embarrassed to put my name to some of them.
  2. Wharton's was a problem with the cogs. Beeston the paddle seems to have dropped off the rod so will take a bit longer.
  3. I notified CRT on Tuesday. They came yesterday and wound their yellow tape round the paddle. A label on the paddle at Tilstone is dated 14th August, saying it will be fixed in two weeks. Latest stoppage notice says it will be fixed next week.
  4. Gas locker vents are often near, or below, the waterline. BW used to show putting a vertical slot in for the vent, so it could still vent if the floor of the gas locker was below the waterline and hence the locker is flooded.
  5. Blow torch gas canisters use a propane/butane mixture. I guess for the same reasons; good heat output but still usable at low temperatures.
  6. Currently there is only one ground paddle working at Tilstone, Beeston Stone and Wharton’s. Beeston Stone particularly slow.
  7. When I first moved to the Nantwich area (over thirty years ago) I joked when I saw the treatment plant next to the canal, “hope they are not using water out of the canal ha ha”. Little did I know...

  9. I thought this was how it already was. The cruise bit resets when you return to you home mooring, so you can go out to your favourite spot on weekend, go back to your home mooring then go back to your favourite spot the next weekend. I don’t see a problem with that. What they want to stop are “ghost moorings” where someone takes a cheap mooring somewhere but never uses it but stays in a locality somewhere else and basically bridge hopping or not moving at all.
  10. When all the towpaths are paved with gold and heated fishing stations every 100 metres.
  11. A few mm is fine. The flue will drop a bit, but as long as it can move a bit in the roof collar it should be ok. If it is too rigid it can crack the stove top or collar when it expands.
  12. You could support the flue in the stove collar with some bits of wood. These will burn away when the stove is lit. i fit the flue so it is floating in the stove collar, then use some fire rope to centre it then use HT silicone to seal.

  14. As aircraft already use a sort of container system for loading freight, catering etc., I would imagine they would use batteries in a similar format and swap them over during turnaround.
  15. For the last few months there have been several boats moored on the offside below the reservoir embankment. It struck me that this was a good spot for a short term visitor mooring. It is piled, and a fence could easily be put up to discourage people from wandering onto the reservoir site (which is accessible anyway from above the locks). This week however there are lots of “no mooring “ signs put in. A shame as this would make a pleasant spot to moor. Maybe CRT are concerned the boats will be in danger when the bank collapses?
  16. I’ve had problems where flakes of rust have dropped down onto the burner. Make sure that is clear of any crap.
  17. I saw a boat once where the owner had cut out the bottom of the fridge and sat in on the base plate. He thought this would mean hardly having to run the fridge at all, until it was pointed out that when he needed the fridge the most, the canal temperature would be much warmer than a desirable fridge temperature and all he would be doing is trying to cool the canal.
  18. Always found vinyl tape best for masking on boats. But again, do not leave it on too long, and don’t use old tape. 24 hours is fine, and as suggested, pull it backwards and away to remove.
  19. Well that would explain the bits of mushroom and tomato.
  20. A marina built about ten years ago had its entrance dimensions determined by the BW Marinas unit. What they didn’t do was take into consideration the width of the canal at that point, which made turning in with a 60ft pretty tricky. The marina owner eventually got CRT to agree to let them widen the entrance. An expensive job requiring the marina entrance to be closed for several weeks.
  21. And obviously news for NBW. Took them a week to crib it off another site...
