  1. Last time I went up the rochdale 9 in 2019 there was so much water we had to lower the upper pounds to stop the water coming over the gates so they could be opened.
  2. I suspect a lot of people will see this as a spam email and delete it. Just CaRT wasting money in my view. Modern management producing lots of words and doing little. Or am I getting old and grumpy?🙂
  3. I see where you are coming from David, but I don't think that's the problem, as the engine slowly reduced speed over about 10 seconds after warming up. Does the rack Tony is talking about have a return spring that would move towards idle as things freed up? I'll have a closer look next time I'm at the boat. Thanks for your input, Cheers, Dixi.
  4. Thanks for the replies chaps. Probably not going back to the boat until March as it is 125 miles each way, so can't check the throttle cable, however, once the engine has warmed up a bit, everything is normal. I'll see what happens next time when I plan to do a bit of boating, weather and stoppages permitting. Cheers, Dixi.
  5. I started my Barrus Shire 45 yesterday, first time since September. It fired up straight away but the idle rpm was around 1200 RPM. I played with the throttle and the revs would increase but not go down. It stayed like that for aroung 10 mins. and then slowly went down to the normal 750 RPM. and behaved normally. I have had this before when it has been left for several months. Is this something to worry about. The engine is about 18 years old with about 4500 hrs.
  6. Like they did on Marple aquaduct. About £2 million I think.
  7. I don't think I'll live to see it, (69 and aiming for 100). The Severn barrage has been talked about since the 1960s and is still nowhere near happening.

Used AW at Great Haywood this year with some friends.
  9. Met them at Braunston top lock on Monday about 3.30pm. Lady worked the lock for me as I was on my own. Pleasant crew, many thanks.
  10. Going through Bath a few years ago we passed a big party boat with a hen party in progress. They had a stripper and whilst he was still wearing a small apron at the front we had the view of his backside. I thought not nice, but wife thought it was ok.
  11. It used to be "There's no Red Port Left in the barrel" Sorry crossed.
  12. Going down the Aston flight about 10 days ago the pounds were quite low so we opened the top and bottom paddles of the top lock for a few minutes and then worked our way down taking our water with us. If you are coming up it's a bit more of a problem.
  13. I love the blind bends on the summit of the Oxford Canal. Never know what's coming round the next bend in the summer, but in the winter you can see through or over the hedges except bridge 131. I always give one long blast on the horn and I've never heard a reply, but met quite a few boats.
  14. A flag is at half mast when either it is 1/3 of the length of the pole below the top or one flag width below the top. (I think). Mine was one flag width down but is now at the top for the new King until 1 pm Sunday when it will be one flag width down again for the period of mourning.
  15. Yes, I misread the times. Tired old eyes and small print.
  16. It's nearly 4 miles from Coventry Basin to the Ricoh arena. How are they going to do it in 30 mins without speeding? I know a lot of the cut is concrete so a wash won't cause damage but is speeding for a water taxi allowed the same as taxis on the road🙂?
  17. I have 6 or 7, the two I use most have a sleeve on the handle that makes them more comfortable to use. I have painted them day-glow orange so I can find them in long grass.
  18. We used to have an organization called "British Standards Institute"? I wonder why we have so many different colours on things like wheelie bins and now bollards. Each council seems to have their own ideas. I live in Dorset about 1 mile from Bournemouth but BCF council have different colours for each type of waste so when I visit my son 2 miles away I have to ask which bin to use. Lots more examples I'm sure.
  19. I suppose you could get a bicycle through the gap.
  20. Coo! It's a bit technical for us NB owners. I used to use GPS and INS a lot when I flew for a living, but I never worried too much as to how the reults were derived, just used the answers. Dixi.
  21. Sorry, but this is my little thing. It's "Coniston Water". There's only one lake in the Lake District and that is "Bassenthwaite Lake". Hat, Coat, Door!
  22. Yes to the BHX Maglev. Best I've been on is the Wuppertal monorail.
  23. A slight aside to this. When foreigners are convicted and recommended for deportation after their sentence, why are they not taken straight from prison to the airport and put on a plane out of the country straight away. There always seems to be an appeal process. Surley this could be completed while they are in prison.
