  1. Between pump-outs, is the boat left unused for any lenght of time, 1-3+ days? If so I've found that filling the bowl twice with clean water, flushes the pipes and vacuum pump clear of contents, leaving only clean water in any puddles. We do this if the boat is left more than 24 hrs. Bod
  2. "All rights reserved. Unauthorised copying reproduction, hiring, lending, public performance & broadcasting prohibited." Is this not the copyright warning on all music? Being more than 10 yards/metres from the source, and being able to hear clearly, would this be Public Broadcasting, and libel to Legal action? Bod
  3. 1st lock only when I saw it. Group of ladies on board. Bod
  4. The day boat from Saltisford arm Warwick went down the Cape locks on Friday. Bod
  5. I'll go and have a look. Bod
  6. I'm currently moored on blue topped bollards, outside the Roundhouse in Birmingham. Freshly painted too, just beyond the tackly stage, but not yet fully hard. Same blue shade as the signs, is this a sign of "we brought too much blue paint, what can we use it for?" Bod
  7. Know the door size before you buy. Whether or not it's comfortable, it has to go in the boat! Bod
  8. AHH, this being done for electrical reasons!! Why do you need such a big alternator? What electrical loads are you using, there may be a different solution. Bod.
  9. Be aware there are some very low bridges on the Basingstoke particularly at Fleet, all roof cargo will be removed, by you or the bridge! Bod
  10. Came up yesterday, can confirm the water is still that clear. Cleared the weedhatch at the top, and again at John the Lock mooring in Tipton. But had to "blast of reverse" to clear the prop many times. Going slow, 1/2 speed seamed not to attract the weed quite so much. Tipton water is clear enough for the fish to get a sun tan! Weeds clearly visible. Bod.
  11. Thats surely not an "Ombudsman" service in the proper sense, Could the Association get involved as it brings their name and work into disrepute. Bod
  12. Having recently done the Ribble Link for the first time in both directions, if you have a boat that doesn't over heat then there is no problem, you will be at high RPM for approx 2 hours, choose a crossing at the higher Tide levels, you'll be fine. Bod
  13. Booked through C&RT's booking system, £10 per night in the lower basin, includes museum entry. However, you will need mooring pins, as there are NO rings or bollards, the actual advertised moorings are unmarked unlit, and some crossed by mooring ropes from "exhibits". Be sure to fill with water before going down as there is no water point in the basin, moor as far from the Holiday Inn air-con fans as possible. The museum is in a period of upheaval due to the moving of stored material, and exhibition re-arranging as of 5/7/22 our visit date. Beware of the top lock, the walls have a huge leak which sprays across the rear deck, as you go down. All this has been said to the museum, the staff are well aware of the problems. (even before I raised them) Bod
  14. Curiously, would the "exact copy" have to be not only the external appearance, but also the internal fixture and fittings, where would this leave the BSS requirements? Bod
  15. It's the cost of tools that will surprise the most. Closely followed by cost of screws, glue, etc. and just how many will be needed, fitting out with oak, will need brass screws at 2/3 times the price of steel screws. Low or poor quality tools will break or wear out quickly and need replacing, abusing tools is a good way to spend money. Worst part is, a lot of these tools, once the boat is finished, the tools are redundant. Bod.
  16. This why VAT. was given to HM Custom and Execise, not Inland Revenue. As Alan says HM Custom & Execise have more powers than the Police. Now that Custom and Revenue have been merged into HMRC. Her Majesty's Revenue & Custom the powers are at their greatest, no search warrent needed, greater powers of arrest than the police, it's best not to mess with them. Bod.
  17. Chemical reaction/damage. Is there any chance that this could have come from the inside? Leaking battery acid could thin the steel from the inside, which would give thin readings. Bod
  18. Photos of the bow and stern will be most helpfull as will photos of the internal structure particularly the engine and weedhatch area. Colecraft has been mentioned, my 98-99 shell has a date written backwards in weld on the weedhatch upstand. Bod.
  19. 94.1% of boats are licenced. Correct or not? I feel that figure is for identifable boats, one's not showing a name or number have been ignored. Bod
  20. To be honest, if you are not buying for a couple of years, then any current information, will be well out of date, when you arrive. Bod.
  21. Try the same exercise, with a 68 foot long, 7 foot wide rectangle. Remember the boat has width, as well as length. Bod
  22. As I see it, with no supplementary charging, the bollard readings will give the total power used, for a given period. How to maintain the current lifestyle, when the boat is removed from that bollard, is the question. Convert this bollard 240v reading to 12vdc will give the capacity of the storage and charging required to maintain that lifestyle. How that power is replaced is a question for another day. Bod
  23. C&RT may have no powers to "Fine" as such, but they do have the power to put you in front of a Magistrate, who does, and gets you a criminal record. Bod
  24. Being in a "nut shell" the story was just bare bones of the start. The BS ticket, was another example of Tony trying to use C&RT's own requirements in a correct and proper way, only to have the goal posts moved without reason. C&RT do have a method of BS ticket exemption, it is published on their web-site, Tony filled in the correct form, correctly. The Trust then required photograph evidence of the state of the boat. This evidence was not, and is still not required on the exemption form. https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/media/library/733.pdf Tony did accept he could of handled that part better, but he was only trying to do exactly as the Trust required. Why is the VAT story a red herring? Do certificates, which say you are doing something have the same VAT rate as a licence, which is permission to do something? This VAT position is an uncomfortable place for the Trust, if they have taken it from the boaters incorrectly, who repays it? Trust or HMRC? Bod Ps this exemption is useful for project boats, or boats being taken for scrap. pps If I recall correctly, Tony did allow photos taken by a 3rd party, but C&RT wouldn't accept them.
  25. Midnight could have put it better. The fact is, if you can get C&RT to use their legal powers properly then you will have done the Inland boating community a very great service. If the Bylaws were used, then the "T&C's" would not be required. In a nutshell Tony Dunkley's problems started when he asked for a Rivers only Pleasure Boat Certificate, which he was fully entitled to. The Trust would only issue a Rivers only licence. The difference being a Certificate does not attract V.A.T., which a licence does. C&RT would not adjust the cost, nor issue a certificate. (indeed most of the staff he had dealing with didn't know the difference.) Bod
