  1. I was told about a week ago by a boater friend about a topic which had sprung up on here. It was regarding the owner of a new boat, built by Orchard Marina and Boatbuilders, suing them. Can't seem to find it now for some reason. However, we were the owners of the boat in question and don't appreciate the subject being brought up. So to stop any further speculation let's just say that they were sued successfully, we got a full refund and now have another boat. So for all those who were asking questions lets hope that's the end of the subject.

  2. I don't see what purpose it serves, apart from making the "Marmite" members seem unbelievably popular (me being the most extreme example).

  3. And there was me thinking that the Olympics were a waste of money, but if it gets the dossers and tossers who abuse the " C & C system " moving from their moorings then l am all for it. 14skipper

  4. Of course it is not the end of the matter. If there is a problem with this company, those who are thinking of buying a boat will want to know. By keeping this to yourself you are allowing the unsuspecting to make the same mistakes that you may have made. And maybe lose everything! Unless there was a gagging agreement atached to the settlement don't you think you have a duty to outline the problems you had and the courts response to them, or at least let others know the court in which the action took place so they can investigate for themselves. Surely if a County Court has handed down a decision then this could be taken as a pecedent in another such case. If of course you have a blown up idea about you own self importance, as it appears, then why the hell did you bother to bring up the subject again. Do you get pleasure out of dangling people on a thread? Perhaps the best thing that can happen now is if the moderators delete this thread and allow you to sink into an annonimity you dont seem to know you want. Edit P.S. This isnt a Boat Building an Maintenance topic.

  5. Take a look at the old OS maps on this site: http://www.ponies.me.uk/maps/osmap.html You can overlay the Google aerial pics to see how river and canal course has altered.

  6. I'm still a bit confused as to why you've dragged up a long deleted thread about a long forgotten subject, in order to "put it to rest". Have your actions not done the exact opposite?

  7. The Black and Gold boat (the one they were sued over) which was brand new and supposed to be bespoke built, had already been bought back before I asked questions about surveys and props for another boat.

  8. I have singler handed many times and agree with the 2 centre ropes. Make sure they are long enough to get to the top of any lock you intend to go through (+ a bit more). Always, always, always store them in the same place and in the same manner after you have used them. You may (or even will) need to use them urgently and you don't want to be untangling them in a hurry. Take your time and think and plan about 2 steps ahead. Wear a life jacket, even on canals. If you fall in and damage yourself on the way down they may be nobody around to drag you out. If on a river make sure your anchor is out of the locker ready to use and is attached to the boat. Enjoy it.

  9. At locks, go slowly, take your time, think through what you are doing, don't panic The rest of the time, enjoy yourself Oh, and a teapot under a tea cozy on the rear slide means you can have more than one mug of tea without having to go inside Richard

  11. Hi Cheshire Rose We have a 22" DVD Technika telly with what sounds like the same symptoms, the fix is easy AND free Using the remote go into the settings / setup options, I can't remember exactly where, but find the settings for factory reset and select it. This will reset the telly back and reinitialise the programme memory. Afterwards the telly scanned and saved all channels correctly. I don't think the Technika telly likes being turned off regularly. Best of luck Steve

  12. I always find it quite amusing when a person who's made a mistake, likens their self to an object of female genitalia, as if they're pretty useless objects. Personally speaking, I've always found them to be quite useful. Not only restricted to the chocolate industry. Have you ever counted how many crisps there are in a normal sized bag? Using the fingers on both of your hands should account for the sum total! Rip off Britain sails again. And alternately, many remain for years as active members and still persist in being a disruptive part of it.

  13. I take the other view, I'm afraid..... The TV is faulty, I think. The weak signal thing should not enter in to it. If you unplugged an antenna from a TV that was otherwise working fine, yes you would lose the picture, unless in a very strong signal area, but as soon as you plug it back in again, it should still be tuned to the right channel. A TV should remember its frequencies, whether turned off, antenna disconnected, and whatever the signal strength. For some reason your TV's tuner is losing its memory of its frequency settings - i.e. I think it has gone wrong. I suspect, (if it is not under warranty), that many of these things are now getting cheap enough that buying another may be as good an option as getting it repaired, but I hope I'm wrong.

  15. Are you for real?! Really though, Are the comparatively small proportion of us 'female dreamers' actually the source of all evils on the cut... Cos surely everyone knows that male boaters never do anything stupid/ thoughtless/ inconvenient/ make rookie mistakes/ don't understand when they first start out/ add your own... Thank God us little women have people like you around to put us in our place and send us back to the bricks and mortar kitchen sinks and out of the way of you serious boy boaters who know better...

  16. All I would add is that no knowledge of the battery voltage is needed. The known but very low resistance that calibrates the shunt, causes a tiny volt drop across it. The tiny voltage when measured accurately with high impedance device, will give a direct indication of the current flowing through the shunt, according to Ohm's law: I = E/R where I is current, E the tiny voltage & R the known shunt resistance. Rather than quoting a resistance, shunts are usually defined by the maximum current they are designed to measure & the voltage they drop at that current. Working backwards as an example, a Victron BMV 501 shunt drops 50mV with 500 amps flowing through it, so shunt resistance is 0.0001Ω The latest smart shunts coming out of Charles Sterling's goody emporium measure the volt drop & digitally encode it on the shunt itself. The resultant signal can then be sent a virtually unlimited distance to the readout without any loss of accuracy.

  17. It was the remarks about the placement of 'sympathy' in dictionary I object to Bizzard. Differences of opinion are fine - it's the immoderate and offensive tone and use of language I dislike. I don't expect this forum to be dull and us all to agree; that would be unnatural. I do think there's a place for civility and consideration.

  18. As the GU is on an East/West line at Braunston, I assume that you are referring to UCC boats moored west of Braunston Bottom Lock. I happen to know that apart from a 70ft section immediately below the lock, the rest of the towpath up to the Marina first entrance is rented from BW by UCC and has been for more than 30 years. I have only rarely ever seen any UCC hire boats actually moored on the Lock holding point, unless a hirer has moored it there on retun, in which case the boat is usually moved by a member of staff, either back to a vacant space, or breasetd up against another moored boat. I recognise that there can often be severe congestion below Bottom Lock, especially at weekends, but the people at UCC never complain if people breast up against one of the hire boats whilst waiting for the lock, or temporarily use a vacant mooring place. People who do not know the situation could well become irritated, but there really is not a problem.

  19. I don't think the issue is as simplistic as follow the rules or else.I'm not defending bridge hopping but I am glad rules are sometimes broken. I spent 18 months living in a BWML marina with no residential planning permission.I lived on board in a small yard where I signed a declaration that I didn't live onboard. This is all rule breaking. How many people live on leisure moorings? In my experience moorings with residential planning permission are so rare as to be virtually non existent. If all the rules in place were enforced then half the liveaboards on the system would potentially be forced into cc'ing.
