CRT mean business......Trust attempts to recover £76k from man

CRT have their heads up their arses pressing on with this. It won't bother him one bit and if he ain't got it he won't pay it. This is not about kicking him off the canals it's about recovering expenses which they know he hasn't got. Idiots wasting even more money.

Maybe I should quit work and live on benefits if it means I can have two boats mad.gif

I bet neither of them are a Sealine Sports cruiser though.......

One will be his home and the other no doubt will be a much more modest affair than your boat.

I also read he didn't quit work by choice, personally I'd like to know a bit more before rushing to conclusions because on the face of it, it sounds as if CRT are being extremely heavy handed and not winning th publicity battle I would suggest.

But are they being heavy handed?

If he is refusing to pay his licence fees why should they continue to allow him on their waterways?

OK perhaps persuing for £76k is a bit OTT but pursuing for licence fees is not IMO.

There are lots of things we cannot tell from this report.

Why was the gentleman unable to get his boat a BSC in time to get a licence. Was it because they were actually so dangerous they should not have been in the water anyway?

Why is the gentleman unable to work? It says he lost the sight of an eye in an accident. Of course I feel dreadfully sorry for anyone who has to live their life with a disability. I also know lot's of disabled people who hold down well paid jobs. I have also come across three occasions where someone took their guide dog into the workplace with them.

Why did CRT return the cheques?

Why does he need 2 boats for his home? we do not know what size these boats are.

I can see no way that CRT will get their money back but just because you are on your uppers it is no excuse to try and get around the law with regard to boat licencing. If you can't afford to keep your boat in a safe condition then it should not be on the canal.

Of course once upon a time people like this fella could have been assured some reasonable assistance from social services/ local authorities etc to help him get back on his feet. Today all the resources are so far stretched I doubt that could happen

This is the problem with these types of reports - their actions may be entirely reasonable (though I can't see how they are ever going to get that amount of money out of him). there are just too many missing bits to the tale - like (as C~R asks) why return the cheques, did they bounce? or was there another reason?

As soon as i read the bit about where he had lost the sight in one eye, and was unable to work because of it, he lost any sympathy from me!

Plenty of work out there for truck mechs.

A huge leap if I may say so - what is the vision in his other eye I wonder?

I know plenty of people who have such bad vision in one eye that if they completely lost it in the other they certainly wouldn't have sufficient vision to work as a truck mechanic....

(Where is Chris Pink when we need him....I'm almost sure he would have a bit of knowledge on this.)

Yes thats maybe so, but why cant he do any work at all?

Plus of course if you have been a mech theres always the office staff needed to control the mechs.

Is Chris a mech?

I think there may be clue in the wording of the newspaper report:

".. who stays between Devizes and the Dundas Aqueduct ..."

and

"A CRT spokesman said: “We have encouraged him to licence and abide by the terms and conditions of a licence ...""

No see my ed. - I suspect somebody from the boating community in that area might be able to shed some light on it all. It must be a well known case.

Plus I don't know why he can't do any work but assuming he has cleared all the requisite hurdles to be able to claim the appropriate benefits (and the article states he is claiming some) then the fact he has satisfied the DWP that he is unable to work that's it, for me at least.

I lost sight in my eye by blowing it out with an air rifle, after 3 months I was back at work lying under trucks repairing then and after 6 months back to full time welding.

I know him from passing, but have no knowledge of his personal affairs. I also don't see why people here feel the need to make assumptions, on the back of a newspaper article. When was the last time that a newspaper gave all the details, and correct ones at that?

F***ing right I am. To be told you may not make it through and if you do you might lose sight in both eyes due to infection I count my lucky stars every day.

On the face of it, it looks unlikely that CRT will get the money from this chap but if it makes others aware that they should comply with the rules (re BSS and licences) then it might have been a worthwhile excercise .

A bit more detail in that Ally thanks.

(and I still don't think CRT have covered themselves in roses)

So you would let him continue to take the piss?
