Narowboat 'Oasis Too' has broken free at Pershore, currently snagged at the top of the second weir near Pershore Lock.

One of the boats at the recreation ground looks to be tilting over - the river has risen by a good ten feet here. My car's under about 5 foot of water!

Sky news - there are a lot of pics (more than 70) of the flooding - including the Avon (a couple of nb's can be seen), the Severn, the Oxford canal completely indunated at Banbury, am amazing pic of the M50 looking more like the Severn in flood, etc, etc I wonder when it is all going to stop.

I guess it's Oasis Too, the Ownerships boat: http://www.oasistoo.co.uk/index.html

If it is, it seems she has a bit of a thing about floods. The website says:

she was built in Stibbington by Pat Buckle and launched from there by Ownerships in 1997. The winter of 1997 saw terrible flooding on the Nene and this caused Oasis Too to be lifted to the roof of the workshop and proceed to remove its roof!

Edited to add:

On News 24 a little while ago, the reporter said the boat which sank at Stratford is thought to have been deliberately set free and the emergency services spent quite a lot of valuable time trying to determine whether there was anyone on board or not. Fortunately, there wasn't.

I may have to revise my plans for next Saturday, Limehouse to Teddington and the the rest of the "Summer" HA HA chugging up to Letchlade. It could be slow going against the current.

Regards Patrick.

My boat and mooring. Oooh dear... I got escorted off it yesterday afternoon, when the water was even higher than this (the little landing stage is no longer attached to the posts which it is just about clinging to in this pic. The posts are about 6ft high.)

Pershore flooding. My car suffered a similar fate, but it was totally submerged. It was creepy seeing only its roof under the water when I was being 'rescued'.

I am a part owner of Oasis Too and we have just been informed that she is perched on the weir walkway this is supposed to be concrete but the prognosis is not good!! No one was aboard so that is a blessing but it will be a sad loss if she does succumb. So fingers crossed!

This from the OwnerShips website:

I have some disastrous news to report regarding Oasis Too, one of the boats in the OwnerShips scheme.

She has been stranded for the past 4 weeks or so on the river Avon at Pershore, Worcs., during which time the river has been un-navigable. During this time OwnerShips (Dave Taylor) have been visiting her regularly.

Last Tuesday Dave reported that the ropes were securely tied to 2 pylons, with 6 feet of each above water level. Over the weekend, the water level had risen very quickly up and beyond these pylons and Oasis Too had set off into the flood, dragging her anchor.

At 10.00 this morning, Dave found her afloat, perched on a rail marking a walkway that crosses the now submerged weir in Pershore. As I write I understand that the water levels are beginning to recede and the vessel is falling over.

We are looking at all possibilities but both OwnerShips and the relevant authorities have reluctantly taken the view that Oasis Too is now likely to be lost.

The owners of the boat have been informed - I am relieved to report that no one has been hurt in this unfortunate incident.

A photo has been posted on another list, showing Oasis Too sitting out of the water:

And the OwnerShips website says she may be saved:

Late this pm I spoke with Dave Taylor, our man on site, who has put unbelievable energy into the last 2 days in assessment and consultation with river authorities, local boatyards, contractors and landowners. The boat has indeed come to rest, and although she is inaccessible by crane, there is now hope that she can be winched back into the water from where she can be secured and damage assessed. A contractor is on the way to the scene now with the necssary equipment - it is anticipated that recovery will be attempted this evening or tomorrow morning.

The owners are being kept informed as a priority, and I will post further news as it develops. Let us hope that Dave's efforts acheive the result that they deserve.

Yes I have just seen Oasis Too sat high and dry (and safe) next to the weir! Wonder if her blacking's due - would be a good time to DIY it!!!

Sadly Gribbit, moored at the recreation ground, has her back end perched on the path and is probably about to go under. I hope the contractor has the heart to attempt to save this craft too, in a more perilous situation than Oasis Too. Young guy owns her, presumably a liveaboard. I nearly cried when I saw the situation of the boat.

I work next to the basin and my colleagues here had heard that the boat was set free by kids (a fair few oiks hang around Bancroft Basin at the best of times). Swines.

How do they get boats that are left high & dry back into the water? What if the area's unsuitable for a mobile crane?

Tirfor winches, ground anchors (if there's nothing to winch to) and BW's got some waterborne lifting gear that they could use.

The main risk is damaging the bottoms.

How about those inflatable lifting equipment used to lift beams?

Well Oasis too has been on the Nat news yesterday (on News 24 every hour)

Here's one such clip off the 11pm News

http://narrowboat.org.uk/2007/07/27/owners...aught-in-flood/

You would hope that the Beeb would know the difference between a narrowboat and a 'huge barge'. Apparently they don't.

Just to let you all know Oasis Too has been rescued! Largely undamaged except for a full loo tank emptying itself !! She is to be taken overland to Stockton Top for a full survey. I will post pictures of the refloating when available!

  • 2 weeks later...

There's an update on Oasis Too on the OwnerShips site:

She is the personification (boatification?) of a miracle!

The loo tank overflow made caualties of some stored duvets, and presumably it was her unskippered journey to the weir that made casualties of a few glasses and plates.

But her superstructure is unmarked, and Dave has checked everything under the deck boards, and ticked all the OK boxes.

And she goes out again this Friday with a clean interior, and a new set of crockery and replacement duvets.

Amazing!
