charliemcsnarly
Does anyone know what companies will insure for fire for a boat that's over 30 years old without having a survey done? Many thanks.
Alan de Enfield
No. But rather than trying the usual 'internet' brokers who are generally just tick-boxes and anything out of the ordinary is a straight NO, try a few 'proper' marine boat insurance brokers who you can have meaningful discussions with. A couple I have used are : Porthcawl Insurance Brokers tel : 01656 784866 GJW ("The UKs largest Direct Boat Insurers") 0151 473 8000

nbfiresprite
Insure for Boats don't require a survey until the boat is 40 years old. https://www.insure4boats.co.uk/aboutus/faqs/ https://www.insure4boats.co.uk
charliemcsnarly
Thanks Alan de Enfield, I rang gfw up and they needed a survey so will try the other one. Thanks nbfirespite the boat is actually 42 years old, I just said 30 as most places specify over 30 years, thanks anyway though.

Giant
I've heard it said recently that Euromarine seem willing to insure pretty much anything that floats. I have no actual evidence to support this rumour but might be worth a call.
Neil Smith
Is it not worth just getting a survey anyway for your own peace of mind. Neil
Naughty Cal
Why do you specifically want fire insurance?

Perhaps the O.P. is seeking a lower and more economical level of insurance, comparable with "Third party, fire and theft" for cars.
Arthur Marshall
If you just want insurance without a survey, the Basic Boat Co does 3rd party (which also covers wreck removal if you sink). If you caught fire, you;d probably sink too... it's adequate for a "holiday" boat. I would imagine if you live on it, you'd always want fully comp though. Jrtm
I can see his point for wanting it. There are time when it would be usefull. Most policys dont actually cover as much as you think. Non cover for damage from neglect or lack of maintenance. But if you say have a boat and you get told by survey you need 1 side fully replating lets say comes to 5k but you cant aford that you only have 3k and will take you 7 months to get the 2k needed you cant the have fully comp as your survey says you need work. Your only option is 3rd party What if some nice chap come along and decides to set your boat on fire your not covered. At least if they did fire cover you can rest easy that your boat is safe from others. Yes it dosnt help with other claims you could make but on an honest note how many of you would go to 3rd party & fire cover. I for 1 would happly have 3rd party &fire rather than fully if it was easyer to get. Read your fine print on a fully comp most engines gearboxes arnt covered, you sink coz you hit something and broke a seam as it was thin but ok for servey your not coverd unless you lie about how you sunk, you set fire to your boat as you had the stove on and the curtain when you left rests againt the stove guess what your not covered if they prove it was negligence. It will cover you for quite a bit theft ect but some boats are left with nothing in them. Some boats are fairly basic inside even a modern or old working boat with fully open hold and just a back cabin are fairly empty so not much to steal and most of the time are watertight so the worst that can happen is fire.
