I dont think it does.

As title.

Is there a fuel boat trading on the K&A between Reading and say, Devizes, does anyone know?

Many thanks...

Nope, FAR to many lucrative boiler fixes to make that worthwhile!

I'm not planning to buy a third boat boat down on the K&A. I hope that's clear. Just idle curiosity should I ever run low on diesel down that way. That's all really ;)

Yes, and changed hands.

Not 100% sure but strongly suspect it is now owned by a member of this forum.

Fuel is expensive and hard to get on the Eastern K&A so a new boat above the flight would be great.

There is fuel usually available at Honeystreet (must stop calling it Gibsons) at a "mddllng" price though fuel sales are a bit secondary to their hire boat bossiness. Only other canalside sales are Newbury and Aldermaston. Both very expensive and not easy to get to when the Kennet is flowing, especially since Newbury took the winding hole away.

That attitude can't be doing their business any good.

Au contraire, I'd say it is a sound business strategy.

Selling fuel makes a few tens of quid a day, if you're lucky. Hiring boats makes hundreds or thousands.

Concentrating your efforts on the most profitable parts of your business is always a winner.

Bossiness Mike, bossiness.

Yes, regular strong flows during the Winter months is, I believe, what makes a fuel boat non viable along the Kennet.

  • 1 month later...

Well in case anyone is interested, "Ozzie" has just started trading as a fuel boat on the eastern end of the K&A. No regular run established yet as he's only just getting off the ground but his home mooring is at Tyle Mill and his boat (can't remember its name) is usually moored there and obviously a fuel boat!

He sells Calor gas for £25 for a 13kg refill, diesel at <can't remember, but a fair price> and solid fuel called "Red" that burns very nicely for £9.50 for 25kg bag.

Call/text Ozzie on 07503 583523 or email him at ozzie.fuelboat@yahoo.co.uk, or just turn up in your boat or van at Tyle Mill Wharf!

Hope that helps someone.

Seems there is a big hole in the K&A at the moment so is there any need for diesel?

The new hole, and more significantly, a couple of big planned stoppages are splitting the K&A even more into Eastern and Western ends (above and below the flight) this winter so a fuel boat at the Eastern end would be really good.

Forgot to mention, Ozzie's cards say he will be plying between Reading and Great Bedwyn.

Yes, he's put up some very nice signs with prices at various points along this end of the K&A. He's also saying that he's planning on doing pump-outs soon.

Now, if we can just discover what's going on with the West Mills swing bridge closure -- that happens to cut this planned run in half -- that would really help things along.

Laurie;- Scavenger went past us [Pewsey] a couple of weeks back going eastward with' The Jacksons' on board so still about.

Jim;- Talking to a CRT guy yesterday who was trying to refill the pound after the Caen hill event & game plan is Swing bridge open on or about the 9th nov.

There is then a stoppage at Pewsey wharf [Damming off] to repair the Wharf.

This is due to start also on the 9th so may well be delayed a week or so to let traffic through.

The wharf to re-open christ-mass time.

Then the VM's to be repaired after.

Note;- this was just a couple of blokes chatting on the towpath not the gospel truth.

Expect reality to plus or minus a month or so on all datesclapping.gif

Of course the damage caused at Caen hill may divert some funds?
