Need a new engine and/or gearbox PDQ

Hi

I do not know whether anyone can help but I need an engine and/or a gearbox fairly quickly. My boat used to have a Ford 1.6 Diesel engine in it. The guy that was “helping” us find a new engine took the old engine out and dismantled it and was disposing of it for us.

Unfortunately, unbeknown to us, he has also taken our gearbox as well and cleared off leaving us in the lurch around the Cropredy area without an engine or a gearbox to fit a prospective engine.

I wonder whether anyone have an engine that might be suitable for my boat (which possibly has a gearbox)? A guy we know has two car engines that could be fitted into the boat (Peugeot and Ford van engines) but, if they were to be fitted in, we need a gearbox that is compatible with those particular engines.

Has anyone got any of the above or do you know of anyone that could help us out?

As I say, we are moored around the Cropredy area.

Not wishing to put too much of a downer on things, but usually making a road diesel engine suitable for use in a boat involves considerably more effort than just finding a "matching" gearbox and bolting it on to that engine.

Generally there may be a requirement to fit a marine "bell housing", (the bit around the flywheel that the gearbox attaches to), and you will need suitable drive plate between engine and gearbox. You will have to arrange suitable mountings for the engine, and, it is generally not a good idea to have an exhaust manifold that is not water cooled, so to do the job properly that would need acquiring as well.

Although I am no expert, it seems the cost to marinise a good existing vehicle engine often far outstrips the cost of a reasonable second-hand engine that is already marinised.

I think you probably need to be looking at the latter option, if you want to end up with something fit for purpose at the lowest cost.

Thanks Alan for your comments.

I think you are right as it will have to be marinised - I have spoken to Calcultt Boats re a BMC engine and gearbox and they have quoted £4,000 altogether, but I am hoping to go a cheaper route if at all possible

mostly inboard engines and parts in these two links.

Good luck.

I'm sure you should be able, with the right advice, to find something that is serviceable and reliable that undercuts that kind of money, but never underestimate that any change of engine may involve changes to engine bed, drive shaft and/or couplings, controls, and connection to cooling circuit.

I'm assuming Calcutt quote is only for engine and box, not installing it?

Clearly you have been screwed over by someone, and I feel most sorry for you, but it is just that I know that attempts to put in vehicle engines without a full marinisation often lead to a load of problems afterwards. If Peugeot / Citroen / Renault engines (as examples) made an easy conversion into a narrow boat that worked well, you might expect to come across it often, but the truth is you almost never do. The Ford XLD engine is more common, but still relatively rare, and even there the experts often think that a diesel that uses a cam belt is not a great idea in a boat, which is one reason, despite their ancient years, the BMCs have always found more favour.

Good luck with your hunt. Unfortunately the usual advice is that getting your existing engine rebuilt is often the best option, but in view of what has happened, sadly that doesn't help you.

Thanks for your comments here, all helpful.

Calcutt did quote me with a view to installing it all, so might be my only option as there appears to be nothing much on the website that I can see that might help - yet, that is. My boat is a 52 foot Clubline Cruiser.

Matty - I have looked around just in case my gearbox happens to be amongst the items mentioned, but I think my engine was dealt with by other means to which the fish and other canal life might not find acceptable (I have been told by a reliable source)

Get in touch with Lancing Marine, they are specialists in marinising Fords and may be able to supply a direct replacement, as has already been advised, never under estimate the cost of modifying an install to suit a different power train.

Ah - Clubline were quite unusual in using the Ford engine, but i think they had quite a lot of them, so it should have been a fairly well set up "pukka" install.

The above suggestion to try and source another XLD may be a good one, because you shouldn't have to change all the things it connects up with, (assuming gearbox is also the same).

Is it not possible to contact the jerk who's waltzed off with your gearbox and tell him to return it, or failing that, report it to the Police as stolen, which is what appears to have happened.

Magic!

It looks very smart - I hope it works well for you.

FWIW - I used to be scared of 'things on pallets' - ?would I be expected to have lifting facilities to unload on site? ? would the driver be awkward in unloading?

Pallet deliveries are much more common nowadays and there is a network of transfer points, much like the parcel delivery system. I had an engine package delivered two years ago and the driver was even prepared to drive over a grassy area to get to me crude A-frame lifting arrangement. (He could easily have got bogged down).

Hi there all.

Have been in touch re Ford engine on Apollo duck. They seem a good company to deal with and have experience in delivering engine s all over the UK/world so hope it will b safely delivered.

The scumbag that stole the gearbox and other personal items on both of our boats was given a week to return said items before I contacted the police. I have now contacted the police and they are on the lookout for him also - see my other posting on General Boating ###boat name removed###

It is the 1600. He has a 1800 also but am going for the 1600.

Yes Dave, I'm very grateful to you put me in touch with someone who could help me. The sooner I can start moving around again the better - keeping an eye on weather as last time I was @ Cropredy it flooded!!
