Snow forecast, any tips or not worry?

On most navigable European rivers there are winter harbours where boats can be moored in relative safety whilst the river is frozen. With the number of boats in such a harbour, the side pressure from expanding ice is not necessarily a major problem, but it was usual for the ice to be cut and broken around boats, as seen below on the Oder. Ice was a big problem when it started thawing, and ice breakers were used to keep if flowing downstream. If it got caught above a bridge and created a dam, there could be large-scale flooding. There is an excellent German book on icebreaking, published at the end of the nineteenth century, which describes how to blow up such a dam.

I seem to recall about 300 boats in the Danube lost 2 or 3 years ago when the ice breakup started due to exceptional depths of ice and strong flood flow underneath.

Completely made up.

cf last year's winter:

http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/442873/Coldest-winter-in-modern-times-on-way-with-snow-forecast-for-Britain-starting-next-week

yeah but they got that new 97 million met office computer now

And what really happened:

"Mean temperatures over the UK were well above the long-term average for all three months with a mean winter temperature of 5.2 oC which is 1.5 oC above the average and the equal-fifth highest in the series."

There are a few companies out there that invent long range forecasts to flog to gullible people and many of the tabloids (especially the Express) happily give these shysters free publicity in the name of a load of website clicks.

I think this years cold weather forecast could be right, its very hard go predict weather more than a few hours ahead but this year the gulf stream is very weak apparently which will allow arctic weather to visit us, this is very credible.

I go by berries, there are a lot of berries on trees this year.

Nature will provide....

It's impossible to make this kind of forecast though (well you can make any forecast of course but it's impossible to make this kind of forecast with any confidence!)

This news report didn't come from the met office (it came from this highly reputable looking company) and I'm pretty sure they don't have a £97m forecasting computer :)

My understanding is that the new supercomputer which the met office has bought will primarily allow better forecasting at a finer resolution than making this kind of long range forecast. The Met Office have been burnt by media misinterpretations of their long range forecasts (MET OFFICE FORECASTS BBQ SUMMER! etc) so they don't promote them any more.

The hose won't be left with water in it, if after undoing it from the tap you keep that end high walking back to the boat passing the hose over your shoulder as you go which will tip all the water out. common sense. closedeyes.gif
