Have you thought of getting it reconditioned at somewhere like the place below? If it has to be a new one do you know the make, model or part number, you may find it's the same one they use in a car, if so it get's a lot cheaper than a marine engine suppliers.

I have found these people very helpful.

The Starter Motor and Alternator Co Ltd 01752 339871

When I wanted a new one for my Barrus Shire, Barrus wanted £658 + vat for the Yanmar part. These people sent me an equivalent for £117 delivered.

I use these people :- http://www.vehicleelectricsshop.co.uk/ very helpful over the phone and quick delivery, good prices as well. It helps if you can identify your alternator rather than just the engine

There are three places within a bus ride of my house that will look at an alternator and pick you a service exchange off their shelf. Bit pointless because that's East London, BUT there will be alternator and starter repairers in most towns so look around your place to find somewhere who will do the bench testing and stock some spare inner parts.

Hi Rich I am also looking for a replacement for the now discontinued Barrus 110a (prestolite 35215315). Could you possible let me know which alternative the Starter Motor and Alternator Co Ltd provided and wether it is a a simple replacement fit. Many thanks in advance.

Not to bothered if it is slightly lower or higher than 110a.

Note: May be of use to you but I have used the above company to source an alternative starter Motor (original fitted Hitachi S13-294) the equiv cost £160 delivered Barrus was about £460. Their Ref is S1501

Put the Prestolite number into google and there are many available or so it seems.

In fact the second one listed is the above company link http://www.startermotor-alternator-store.co.uk/12v-marine-alternator-110amp-35215315-7593-p.asp

Edit: why do glaring typo's only appear after you have posted.frusty.gif

RE Barrus Shire after market alternators

This may help expalin why it is difficult to track down an after market alternator for Barrus shire

My question

"Could you please advise on stock availability for a 12V MARINE ALTERNATOR 110AMP 35215315 (Barrus RDG5725) Or a suitable alternative (90a -110a range) many thanks"

Reply

"Unfortunately the 352- series has been discontinued, it was a range of units that was only ever made in one factory (Mexico) which has now shut down, no other company made them aftermarket for some reason.

They have very "funny" measurements, so there isn't a direct alternative, although you might look at some of the units beginning with 6602, as these may be close to what you have there"

Helps explain why it is difficult to obtain these, most of the google links take you to sites which indicated No Stock or No availability.

Thats Plan A out the window

Hope this helps and saves some fruitless searching

I used to have a Sunday job repairing car alternators and starters.

If the castings for the original alternator are in good condition a good rebuilder would probably be able to cannibalise another type of alternator for the new parts required....generally it is only the castings that are unique to a particular model.

It's the sort of thing I used to do years ago cheers.gif

Lancashire Rotating Electrics are very good for repairs and new alts.

They are ex Leyland Motors and supply Walsh's the Gardner specialist.

I left an alternator with them for repair and one of their staff offered to deliver it to a forum member at Blackpool if it made delivery easier for me.
