Arthur Brown
In modern systems there will usually be copper alloys, steel and aluminium alloys in contact with the water so there are huge issues with corrosion internally so they fill the antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors. Use pure glycol antifreeze and something in your system will corrode and the engine coolant will be in the bilge and probably pumped into the cut, this will kill your engine and kill the fish for far enough to get you noticed. Grace and Favour
No Neil. I said that my system is 34 litres. So I'll need 17-18 litres of antifreeze. Rob.... I changed mine last autumn, and bought mine on the Midland Chandlers "Freaky Friday" (20% discount) day. Though I will probably buy 25Ltr from a motor factors next time. (I have a 38ltr system.) Chalky
Car screenwash is different! 1/ don't try it as antifreeze 2/ it is often sold diluted so that the transport container is not hazardous and doesn't need expensive ADR trucking as the undiluted screenwash concentrate is highly flammable. ADR class 2 flammable liquid (IIRC), the ready to use is not flammable. Its isopropyl alcohol
Phil Ambrose
Hi Phil. 50 years ago I could buy neat antifreeze for my Vauxhall Wyvern, get 2 gallons of petrol, go to the pub and get drunk and still have change from 5 bob. That's old proper money.....to you young whipper snappers. Rob.... Ah those were the days, a pint, pork pie and change out of 2s and 6d. (12 1/2p in todays money)Phil
Neil Smith
Sorry rob when you said it needs 34 litres I assumed you meant anti freeze. Neil
robmilton
If you Google Andrew page and find your nearest branch they should deliver it to you no problem, blue and pink antifreeze will mix but it brings the pink antifreeze down to the level of the blue, neat antifreeze/ coolant is best used at 50 percent. frangar
I think I read somewhere that the red antifreeze isn't great with copper...of which there is a fair bit on the average narrowboat cooling system. Might be worth a google...sorry but the connection here isn't good! I agree with what others have said..antifreeze is cheap compared with corroded engine components! Cheers Gareth

RLWP
I have a small Vetus twin in the workshop with an aluminium pump housing. For that matter most modern BMC pumps are alloy, as are the thermostat housings Bowman heat exchangers are alloy Richard

smileypete
Lister ST - aluminium heads I don't think that defeats your argument though Richard I haven't started to form an argument yet, there probably are other reasons to defeat it. Found a few links on antifreeze though, backs up what Bizzard says: http://www.coolantexperts.com/coolant_overview/traditional_coolant http://www.machinerylubrication.com/Read/841/coolant-fundamentals http://www.aa-academy.com/Training/Learning%20Zone/Antifreeze.asp Apparently the pink stuff is kinder to ally. Also Fernox claims compatibility with ally: http://www.fernox.com/problem+solving/faqs/general cheers, Pete. ~smpt~ Edited September 9, 2014 by smileypete
