Is it far enough out of Stoke to be a safe place to moor in August?

Yes, we have moored there a few times.

I think it used to have problems but as safe as anywhere now. We've moored a number of times.

We spent a couple of days there in June no evidence of problems, there will be plenty of boats around in August I expect.

We stayed there in May last year and the biggest concern was if there would be room to moor as it gets very popular and a lot of people use it as a nicely placed stop before heading to the tunnel. It is a lovely place and I can't imagine there being ay problems there.

Yes, but watch out for the low flying geese. I've never seen so many come at me squadron after squadron.

Yes, its popular and quiet - and safety in numbers.

And if you're heading towards Harecastle, the South end of the tunnel is a very quiet spot.

We stopped at Westport last year for an hour or two, to make some running repairs. It looks beautiful and I would fancy mooring there, and exploring the area.

Early evening when it's quiet , it's a really nice walk around the lake. We were told in the deep dim distant past it was a natural hollow and Port Vale originally played there before it became a dumping ground for the spoils from the pottery industry.

There is a board near that funny looking building that tells you the history of the area.

There are crested grebes on the lake and last year they had youngsters they were feeding. Lovely to watch

Superb mooring with all facilities a few hundred yards away at Longport wharf.

 

And to be pedantic, it's Westport, all one word like Middleport and Longport. Only Port Vale is two words and that's a football club, not a place.

We have stayed at westport twice, coming from either direction! Once with the dog and once before we had her, our only problem was the ducks that woke us early pecking at our hull! Its a really nice spot. Likewise though we havent done it, some chose to moor near to the tunnel and that looks a nice spot too and may be quieter.
