A simple group of questions,

Has any one managed to navigate the ribble crossing on a 58ft 10ft wide beam.

She has a 75 beta will that be able to cope with the tidal crossing..

What other equipement will we need.

Are the locks manned with lock keepers.

Our aim is to get to Lancaster then over to glasson dock.

Are we dreaming or is it possible.

I wouldn't have thought so.

The link is very narrow and very shallow, the locks are wide but 57' narrow boats have to reverse into the last set of locks. Not easy as there is very little room due to silt build up.

To be sure contact CArT in Wigan

The Savick Brook Is narrow and twisty. I doubt a wide beam would go but ask CRT. The locks and the crossing itself would present no problem - even the one which is done backwards. The locks are overseen by lockies but you may have to do them yourself. Also the depth is limited but I can't remember what to.

When we went over last year there was a widebeam in the flotilla which didn't have any problems.

When you go you will have to book the trip as there are limited numbers - and check with your insurers - ours insisted that we had flares with us for the tidal bit.

Hi Woodjam,

If you find that the Lancaster is out of reach then still do the Ribble up to Preston Dock Marina. Your Beta 75 will push the boat with no problems and it's worth the trip even without the Lancaster.

When we first arrived at Tarleton for our Ribble crossing a convoy was just arriving, and I'm fairly sure there was a widebeam amongst them.

Best to talk to CRT to make sure.

Thank you for your suggestions so far.

We are on day two of waiting for advice from the CRT.

Do any others have tails of the croosing or advice.

As Newbies we are a little excited with taking woodJam on a magical maiden voyage.

Our story has been well documented on here.

We set off from Tarleton through Harry's lock half thinking that he'd say, "Sorry, you're not crossing the Ribble in that tub with an egg whisk for a propeller!" But, to our surprise and delight he let us through.

We were in a convoy with several narrowboats and two wide beams, one of which was a 12 x 57 footer. Both wide beams handled the 3 metre tide admirably and so did we until after circling the marker (several times) where you make your turn towards Preston Dock, simply in wait for a photo shot from another boater, we were then running late for the last entry into the dock before the tide turned.

All of the other boats then raced ahead in a state of panic, leaving us stragglers behind. Having only a 19hp three cylinder Vetus engine and that egg whisk to propel us along, we were losing sight of the other boats, that is until our friends on one of the wide beams circled back to make sure we were ok. Our 40 footer was relishing the challenge of proper lumpy water, but the engine at full revs was beginning to cook under the strain. So, Mrs Doorman was instructed to run the hot water tap in order to cool the calorifier tank down and dissipate some heat energy from the engine. That worked a treat!

We just about made it into Preston Dock before the tide turned, otherwise we'd have ended up in Dublin that day. Would I do it again? Too bloody right!

You have plenty of time to collect the advice as it is likely to be several months before you can get the next booking!

In January we did not get our first choice of dates for next week.

I'm sure your 75 Beta would be more than adequate, our 57 ft narrowboat managed it easily with our 42hp isuzu

Savick Brook is windy and shallow see pics, this would be the most difficult bit for a widebeam

Glasson is fabulous!

I think though this widebeam is going from Preston dock to Tarleton - Preston dock does not connect with the Lancaster canal.

However, when we were at Glasson and on the Lancaster we did see (only very few) widebeams, but they may have been craned in - don't know

The locks going down from the lancaster to Glasson are wide locks as are the locks on the Ribble Link
