Royal Society for the Prevention of Birds?

And all these years I thought they were for the protection of birds now I realise I have been doing it all wrong! Now where did I put the shotgun.......smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif

RSFTPOB does look a bit unwieldy. Not like CART.

So its not about following the generalised route of not mentioning the ands ofs etc but more making things how you feel they should be?

Why not just use the abbreviation that CRT themselves use i.e.CRT

The memory dims as time passes but I seem to recall they were never quite as miserable as Butlings.

I wish people would use the correct "CRT" abbreviation.

As I skim-read the OP I immediately thought "Huh?...I haven't got a facebook page." and it isn't the first time I've wondered what I'm being accused of.

canal and river trust

I am so sorry that i have offended you with my lack of knowledge by using such a terrible

abbreviation's that distress you so much. :icecream:

They like to be known as "CRT" so, because I would rather my chosen name not be mucked about with, I will respect their wish.

Correct I have this from Sally Ash herself no less.

Or they are happy to be referred to as 'The Trust' or Canal and River Trust depending on the context of how it is being used.

I too sometimes see Carlt when I see Cart or C&rt for what it is worth.

So glad were not on this forum.

I intrigued to know how you managed to post this and 21 others if you are 'not on this forum'

My nickname for it dates back many years to when my late father was a member of the RSPB. When their magazine 'Avocet' arrived in the post I would tease him by telling him that the Society for the Prevention of Birds had written to him.

In answer to your second question, because CART is too good to resist.

A peculiar exception to your rule is the British Army Of The Rhine (of which Dad was also a member!). If one abbreviated all its words it should have been BAOTR. Under your system it would have become BAR. In fact it was always (and maybe still is) known as BAOR.

I wish we could put an end to continuous moaners!

I thought, in light of the abbreviation culture it might be nice to have a guide to all this continuity.

So I proudly present;

PInk’s Guide to Boating Abbreviations

CA continuous arseholes

CB continuous boating

CC continuous cruisers

CD continuous daily mail readers

CE continuous enjoyment

CF continuous followers

CG continuous greivances

CH continuous hassle

CI continuously impaired

CJ continuous journey

CK continuously kick off

CL continuous leaks

CM continuous moaners

CN continuous naggers

CO continue off

CP continuously pointless

CQ continuous quacking

CR continuous rewriting of the rules

CS continuous sanctity

CT continuously try

CU continuous underlying problems

CV continuous verbosity

CW continuous whingers

CX continuous washers

CZ continuous ZZZs

NCCC never ceasing continuous moaners

CART something to put behind a horse

To sum up:

Because of the CV of so many CAs who are CMing about CCers, whipping up the CDs into a frenzy of CS without identifying any CU - not exclusively those whose boats are covered with CWs - the CE of our CB is CI. It should be obvious that a CJ is impossible no matter how much CR occurs even though this is in danger of being just so much CH as the CP crusaders CT to air CGs in an attempt to CK those they don't like.

Therefore it would be great if the NCCCers would just CO because it really is just so much CZ.

The Canal and River Trust definitely don't like being called CART. I did this and got bollocked by Vince Moran.

He said it is "The Trust".

They had to have seen this abbreviation coming though surely? If they didn't want to be called CART or any variation thereof, why didn't they christen themselves the River & Canal Trust?

Lucky it wasn't the Waterways of England Trust or Canals & Navigations Trust.*

A greeno to Mr. Pink, who has evidently made good use of a slow day at the office.

* or, even worse, both.

I think that is a fair point

- I suspect though they preside over more miles of canal than rivers which is what dictated which way around they came.

This is very much putting the CART before the Ass...

......an old joke which demonstrates precisely why they prefer CRT or 'The Trust' I would say.

It also shows why companies give alot of thought to their' names.

CRT are well aware of the mistake......now.

As everyone should know, marketing creates sales - if you get it right.

Although following such complain, it has been pointed out it was not hard at the time to find them use "CART" on their own web-site.

They do however since seem to have had a bit of a campaign to delete the obvious ones that were there.

I wonder what The National Trust think about that?

Same as The Dogs Trust?? or any of the numerous National Health Trusts/Foundation Trusts, we commonly used to refer to the big neighbouring NHS Foundation Trust as 'The Trust'.

I don't believe NT have a sole claim on that wording.

Mention the Trust, anywhere outside of the boating community, and I bet none would have a clue. It's more likely to be associated with the National Trust.

Not to me and anybody else who works in or has worked in the NHS - it would mean nothing of the sort.
